IRISH COFFEE According to legend, in the early 1940s, a Pan Am flying boat docked near Shannon Airport. The freezing passengers were greeted by bartender and chef Joe Sheridan, who poured Irish whiskey into the coffee he served them. When asked what they were drinking, he told them it was Irish coffee. Sheridan later emigrated to San Francisco, where it is believed he perfected and popularized the drink. BREASTFEEDING BONUS Attention, new moms: There’s yet another health benefit to breastfeeding, and this one’s all for you. A nearly 30-year study recently published in the JAMA Internal Medicine journal found moms who breastfed for at least six months cut their risk of type 2 diabetes nearly in half. Kaiser Permanente conducted the study between 1971 and 2000, and it included data reported by the 1,238 women participants—and their doctors. The researchers discovered a 47-percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes among those who breastfed their children for six months or more, compared to those who did not breastfeed at all. For the duration of the study, each woman gave birth to at least one child and the moms were routinely screened for diabetes before and after their pregnancies.…

The Community Foundation of Collier County (cfcollier.org) recently received its first donation of a commercial building, courtesy of Jerry Nichols, a local wealth management advisor and longtime supporter of the foundation. The central Naples building, which Nichols owned for 10 years, provides rental income. Now, instead of a chunk of that income going to the IRS for taxes, the full amount goes directly to Nichols’ donoradvised fund, which supports nonprofits that improve children’s lives through education, access to healthcare, and a safe environment. Nichols also serves on the foundation’s professional advisor committee, which encourages people to make donations during their lifetime so they can see how their gift is benefiting the community. Avow, a nonprofit hospice in Naples, now offers its patients a chance to experience some of the joy of traveling the world, even if they can’t physically be there. The Moorings Park Foundation recently donated five headsets of the Oculus Virtual Reality System, which can simulate experiences such as visiting the Great Wall of China or walking the halls of the Louvre Museum in Paris. Last year, Avow Foundation (avowcares.org/foundation) created a wish list wall for its staff to make requests that would benefit patients and their families. On a beautiful evening during season, guests gathered at the Port Royal home of Mary Pat and Frank Hussey for a cocktail party to introduce new friends to the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County, a cause that has been close to the couple’s hearts for more than 25 years.
