Philanthropist Myra Janco Daniels learned the joy of giving as a first-grader when her grandmother gave her 50 cents and encouraged her to give part of it away—or give it back. “I went to bed that night and thought about two kids at school who sat in front of me and had holes in their shoes,” recalls Daniels, now 93. “I secretly put a dime in each of their desks and wrote a note that said: ‘To a friend, from a friend.’ They were so excited. I saw what joy two dimes meant.” Sharing would become a constant for Daniels. Why do people who give up meat frequently embark on a seemingly endless search for something with the taste and texture of meat? The frozen food section of the supermarket is ever-expanding its vegetarian and vegan alternatives, so it appears the desire to sink your teeth into a hamburger is far from fading. The latest craze in beef substitutes is the vegan Impossible Burger, created by Silicon Valley startup Impossible Foods. The burger actually “bleeds” when cooked, and it includes heme, a genetically modified protein that causes it to sizzle and smell like meat. A quarter-pound patty contains 220 calories, 13 grams of fat, 5 grams of carbs, and 20 grams of protein. Because Impossible Foods is still in the process of ramping up production, the burger isn’t available yet…

A startlingly beautiful sculptural installation, The Four Seasons by the internationally renowned contemporary American artist Philip Haas is coming to Artis—Naples beginning this month. Featuring intricate compositions of vegetables, fruit, branches, leaves, and ivy, these 15-foot human busts of painted and pigmented fiberglass moss are so complex they never reveal themselves the same way twice. Inspired by Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s paintings of the same name, the acclaimed Haas collection has been on a five-year, nine-venue tour of museums and gardens throughout the United States and Europe. There is no shortage of Asian restaurants in Naples, unless you’re looking for one in the lobby of a hotel. After Hurricane Irma blew through town last year, Naples Grande Beach Resort closed for renovation.
