February is, for many, a time of red roses and romance. But for my father, it was a time for Fannie May candy, which in the 1970s had a shop at the Pentagon, where he was assigned as an Army officer. Sometimes too much of a good thing is, well, too much. For the first time in its 14-year history, Cars on Fifth is seeking to steer downtown Naples’ largest one-day event in a new direction by charging admission. “The show has been such an incredible success that it has created challenges,” says Tom O’Riordan, president of the Naples chapter of the Ferrari Club of America, which puts on the show as a fundraiser for St. Matthew’s House. “Last year the crowd was around 50,000, and that’s a lot of people. The complaints we get are that people park everywhere, or that there’s nowhere to park at all. Naples now has its very own brand of vodka and barrel-aged rum. Brien Spina, owner of the Off the Hook Comedy Club on Vanderbilt Beach Road, launched Captain Brien Spirits in November. Spina is a licensed Coast Guard captain and a serial entrepreneur: He opened his comedy club on Marco Island in 2005, where he also operated one of the largest commercial fishing fleets in Southwest Florida. The club migrated with him when he moved to Naples. List Distillery in Fort Myers produces both of Spina’s spirits. The vodka is sugar-free, gluten-free, and organic. The rum, which is gluten-free, is aged in cask for three months for optimum flavor. “Walk” shrimp nachos first appeared 10 years ago at Riverwalk’s sister restaurant, The Dock, and migrated to Tin City by popular demand. “Mexican and Asian cuisines normally don’t fuse well,” says executive chef Corey Heath, “but the combination of sweet and savory tastes here has really appealed to diners.” For the firecracker shrimp, Heath uses small shellfish similar to rock shrimp; they’re bathed in buttermilk, rolled in seasoned flour, and fried before being tossed in a Thai chili sauce. Contemporary Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave brings her one-of-a-kind fashion sculptures to Artis—Naples in “Isabelle de Borchgrave: Fashioning Art from Paper.” The exhibition begins this month and spans more than 300 years of fashion history, including magnificent life-size recreations of ornate Renaissance gowns, dressings culled from world-class paintings, and costumes from the Ballet Russes. De Borchgrave’s work features many elements of trompe l’oeil, an artistic technique that relies on realistic imagery to fool the eye. In addition to painting delicate details that mimic thread, buttons, belts, and more, de Borchgrave manipulates her main material—paper—in such a way that it resembles and hangs like fine fabrics. The ancient Key Marco Cat, which Frank Hamilton Cushing unearthed during his landmark 1896 excavation, is finally home at the Marco Island Historical Museum. While the Key Marco Cat visited Marco Island for a quick stay in 1999, this time it will be around until April 2021. Valued for its detailed beauty and pristine condition, the Key Marco Cat has been described as one of the finest pieces of pre-Columbian Native American art ever discovered in North America.
