The event is so revered in Naples that the full name isn’t required. It’s simply known as Hats. When I joined Naples Illustrated last fall, I hadn’t even learned how to operate my office chair when I was given my millinery marching orders: You’ll need to be at Hats. And you’ll need to be wearing one. Festooned with a fascinator and sporting a red dress to reflect the Rubies and Roses theme, my first foray into the Naples social scene—Hats in the Garden—is widely considered to mark the beginning of season. Many part-time Naples residents, I’m told, who winter here starting in January, will fly in just for Hats and then head back north until after the holidays. Beekeeping might seem like a strange business for Tom May, a cellist with the Naples Philharmonic, but it’s actually part of his heritage. “My mom was a musician, and my dad and grandpa were both beekeepers,” May says. “I started at age 6 when my dad paid me a dime for each case of honey I bottled and labelled.” As an adult, May received his first hive as an anniversary gift from his wife in 1999. He now has 85, and his hobby has morphed into the Naples Honey Company. One of the main goals in any interior design project is to establish an aesthetic that is at once current and enduring.
