This summer, the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens (239-262-5409, napleszoo.org) will open a new Florida panther exhibit as part of an effort to provide care for injured panthers. Visitors will be able to see a 2-year-old male named Uno, who was blinded by a shotgun blast in Collier County and rescued by Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission biologists. Since Uno cannot return to the wild, the zoo is creating a permanent home for him that will help expand awareness of Florida panther issues. Courtney Jolly, a spokesperson for the zoo, says, “It’s a great education tool for us to have Uno here, to show people how beautiful an animal he is, and impress on them the fact that something needs to be done to save this endangered species that’s…

Flaxseed has long been known for its many health benefits. Now, there may be another possible reason to savor the nutrient-dense seed, which is rich in fiber, omega-3 essential fatty acids and lignans, a plant hormone that mimics estrogen and may have antioxidant properties. After a review of 11 studies and 14 trials, researchers found that eating flaxseeds, also known as linseeds, may help lower blood pressure slightly, according to findings published in The Journal of Nutrition. Researchers also noted the benefits may increase when consuming whole flaxseeds over a period of more than three months. It is hard to believe this month marks two years since the passing of our beloved publisher and friend, Ron Woods. Though his absence has left an enormous void, his vision is still very much a part of our culture. Since acquiring this company in 1991, Ron had big plans. For some, it’s a mere addition to a favorite cocktail; for others, it’s a stand-alone drink with both character and charm. When vermouth was invented towards the end of the seventeenth century, it was an immediate sensation. The creation is generally credited to Antonio Benedetto Carpano, who enhanced the coarse wine of the period with a blend of 30 herbs and spices. The sweetness of Carpano’s potion appealed to many segments of the population (particularly to the ladies), and became a favorite of the Turin royal court. In time, a second style—pale and dry—was introduced in France by Joseph Noilly in the early 1800s. In his far too brief life, Steven Leonard, who perished in a fire in February, created a lasting, positive effect on countless lives in and around Naples. As his good friend and colleague William Boyajian, owner of Port Royal Jewelers, recalls, it was Leonard who initiated a kind of charity dossier years ago, amassing a broad list of local nonprofits that their company would support, from the Humane Society Naples, to the Sunshine Kids, the Naples Zoo, the Guadalupe Center, Opera Naples and many others. “He said, ‘We can’t be the biggest jeweler in town, but we can have the biggest heart,’” Boyajian says. Simone Lutgert Genuine, spunky, strong Daughter: Heather Dockweiler With three children, four stepchildren and eight grandchildren, Simone Lutgert has her hands full as a parent. Dark, stark and brutal are words often associated with the black and white pictures shot by Arthur Fellig—a.k.a. Weegee—the pioneering twentieth-century photographer whose gritty photos captured scenes of crime, life and death in New York. His art, which later influenced many photographers’ work as well as movies (including the recent film Nightcrawler), fascinates with an unblinking look at often seamy subjects. The exhibit “Weegee by Weegee” invites viewers to feel what it would be like to spend a night with the photographer, moving through images from fires, murders and accidents, to entertainment, to streets in the dead of night. To many local families with someone stricken by cancer, Fred Klaucke is a blessing. But Klaucke insists he is the one who feels blessed to help those struggling to make ends meet while they fight for their lives. Klaucke left the corporate world in 2000, after World of Science, the retail chain he founded and later went public, was sold. He and his wife started their self-funded Lion and The Lamb Foundation in New York before moving to Naples full-time in 2004. Just four years later, devastatingly, his wife, Laura, passed away from lung and brain cancer.
