I love contrast, which is one of the many things that appeals to me about the Paradise Coast. Whether it’s a swamp buggy parade ambling down a street near multimillion-dollar homes or the world’s most decadent milkshake served alongside a tahini cauliflower salad (I’m talking to you, Lake Park Diner), Naples is resplendent with dichotomy. National Jewel Day is March 13, an apropos time to ask Jarred Kaplan, managing partner of Provident Jewelry, about what’s hot—and what’s not. Diamonds are still a girl’s best friend, particularly in blue, pink, or a strand of many. Fancy blue diamonds are in demand, while pinks remain as popular as ever. From blueberry to glittering azure to dark grey (think: Hope Diamond), natural blue diamonds are rare, the result of trace amounts of boron. Blue diamonds are second only to red, with a buy-in of $500,000 for a “reasonably sized” one. Last year, a $6.7 million blue diamond ring fetched the highest bid during Christie’s New York Magnificent Jewels auction. RISE AND SHINE Designer Rebecca Masterson of Marc-Michaels Interior Design delivered a splash of glamour to this Naples bedroom by juxtaposing metallic accents, including a mirrored starburst accessory, with moody hues. “We wanted this guest room to feel sophisticated,” she says. “We opted for a dark-stained headboard wall and tall, white, lacquered chests on either side of the upholstered bed. When Tom Jordan arrived in Sonoma in 1972, the region was a backwater. Napa didn’t register on anyone’s radar at the time (the Paris Wine Tasting was still four years away), and its western neighbor was one of the last places connoisseurs looked for fine wine. Jordan, however, saw things differently. He made his money in the oil industry and understood geology. Plus, he had friends in Sonoma. When Sicily was hit by famine and drought, the devout population prayed to St. Joseph for rain. They were rewarded with torrential downpours that revived their crops, and their ancestors now honor the benevolent saint with a feast every March 19—which is also when Italians celebrate Father’s Day. Neapolitan Paula Malone has always had a passion for skiing. The New Jersey native often vacationed in Aspen with her family, but, in the late 1990s, they decided that the town had gotten too frenetic and celebrity-focused, so they turned their attention to Telluride.
