As a child, I collected stamps and recall spending inordinate amounts of time—usually at my grandmother’s house—categorizing these tiny, colorful, and often artistic patches of postal significance. Many hours, I’m sure, were spent dreaming of a career in philately. Of course, that didn’t happen. And a few years later, very likely, my collection could have been found underneath my bed, where all of my neglected hobbies died hard and rested in peace. Needless to say, I’ve always marveled at those who can turn their hobbies, interests, and passions into the extraordinary. It requires a steadfast commitment and determination, not to mention a great deal of patience. In this issue, we feature a few Neapolitans who are doing just that. A small-town feel, daily sunsets, and Naples’ laid-back lifestyle¾—close to shopping, shoreline, and restaurants¾—lured Eileen and Barry Smith from Florida’s East Coast, where they had originally relocated from New Jersey about three years ago. “We love Naples,” the mostly retired couple agrees. Realtor Adam Carriero, who specializes in downtown Naples and waterfront communities at Gulfcoast International Properties Naples, understood what the two wanted and showed them a five-bedroom, 3,868-square-foot home in the Moorings. Whatever they do, Jay and Patty Baker seem to hit out-of-the-park homeruns. Devoted philanthropists, the Bakers are well-known for their contributions in Collier County to The Baker Museum at Artis—Naples; Naples Community Hospital; The Naples Players; Gulfshore Playhouse; and many others. The first time Angela Melvin visited a center intended to help grieving children, she cried. She recalls wishing that her family had access to a similar organization decades earlier when, at age 10, she lost her mother to a car crash. A few years after that visit, she moved back to her hometown of Fort Myers. There, a lack of similar programs led her to found Valerie’s House, named after her mother. “The dream is, no child grieves alone, no family grieves alone,” she explains.
