It can be difficult to exercise if you have an injury or arthritis. A technique called blood flow–restriction training (BFR) may help. Like the name suggests, the process involves restricting blood flow to the area you’re exercising by wrapping a cuff around the limb. “When I restrict blood flow to muscles and actually expect them to exercise … the muscles think they have a huge load demand placed upon them, when it’s a really light weight,” explains Shane Smith, a physical therapist and the owner of Naples Premier Physical Therapy.
