The former pro athlete, who is completing work on a book about his football life and battle with bipolar disorder, will serve as Grand Marshal for the annual walk to benefit NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) of Collier County (namicollier.org) February 27 at Cambier Park. The strong, silent-type persona he projected as a player had much to do with a mental illness that went undiagnosed for many years. “I kept to myself when I played,” he says. “I was no-nonsense, didn’t really care about the social life.
