For four years, Australians were obsessed with the unfolding romance of AAMI’s safe driver, Rhonda, and her Balinese lover, Ketut – played by actors Mandy McElhinney and Kadek Mahardika.
Now, almost 10 years since the first ad hit our screens, Melbourne-based Kadek, 37, reveals to New Idea that he never expected the campaign to become as popular as it did.
“[At the time] I just thought it was a bit of fun, to sit down with Mandy on the set and make something together,” he says.
Yet, the ads took on a life of their own, even reaching cult status in Australia’s favourite holiday spot, Bali, where ‘Kiss Me Ketut’ T-shirts were seen on every street corner.
