Voiceover star John Blackman passed away last week aged 76 following a run of ill health, including a cancer diagnosis. The Aussie television and radio legend was especially renowned for his work on Hey Hey It’s Saturday. At the time New Idea went to press, HeyHeyhost Daryl Somers had yet to publicly comment on the loss, but HeyHey’s saxophonist Wilbur Wilde said, “Without John there was no HeyHey,” adding that he “was loved by all Australians”. Presenter Livinia Nixon said she was “heartbroken” for the late star’s loved ones, describing him as “the backbone of that family”. Comedian Marty Fields acknowledged John as “a master voice-over announcer and incredible radio pioneer”.
