Car Parts Needed! Many aspects of life have been disrupted since the COVID-19 pandemic began. But who would have thought it would be a challenge to build or buy a new car? In December, the Toyota Motor Company of Japan announced a halt in production at many of its factories because not enough parts are being received from Southeast Asian suppliers. This could mean about 9,000 less vehicles will be produced, including Lexus models and Land Cruisers. According to Toyota, which is the largest car producer by volume in the world, the production numbers were already down. This was due to supply chain disruptions that had affected parts coming from Malaysia and Vietnam. Demand is high, however, and the company still hopes to meet a goal of 9 million vehicles…
Digging Up Doug Colin and Donna Craig-Brown were weeding in their garden in New Zealand when Colin’s hoe struck something huge. They dug around it, thinking it was some kind of strange fungal growth. They couldn’t believe what they unearthed. It was a potato! But what a potato! Huge – and, it has to be said, fairly ugly. They named it Doug (because it was ‘dug’ up), and Colin built a small cart to tow it around. ‘We put a hat on him. We put him on Facebook, taking him for a walk, giving him some sunshine,’ he said. ‘It’s all a bit of fun. It’s amazing what entertains people.’ Doug is now a celebrity in New Zealand, and he’s likely to win global fame too. The current Guinness World…
Starbase is Coming! In the small town of Boca Chika, in Texas, USA, Elon Musk is busy building Starbase – the world’s first space airport. Elon has always talked about his intention to build a human colony on Mars, but first he needs to build a facility on Earth to help get people there. The plan is that by the end of 2026 – just five years from now – his ‘Super Heavy’ rockets and his ‘Starship’ shuttles will transport up to 100 people at a time to the red planet. Not only that, the rockets and shuttles will be programmed to land safely back on Earth at the end of a mission. 2026? Crikey! Bite Sized! Together, the ‘Starship’ shuttle pod and the ‘Superheavy’ rocket will form the largest…
The Birth of Elvis Presley Elvis Presley was born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, USA. He had no brothers or sisters, and his parents Vernon and Gladys Presely were not well off. As a young boy, Elvis became interested in music and loved listening to the choir in his local church. His teacher entered him in a talent contest when he was only 10 years old. It was his first time singing in front of an audience. He sang the song ‘Old Shep', but only managed to finish in fifth place. He got his first guitar later that year. When Elvis was 13, the family moved to Memphis, Tennessee. Elvis lived for music and brought his guitar everywhere. He never learned to read music, but quickly picked up…
