The National Coin & Bullion Association (NCBA) and its New York-based members have successfully defeated a proposal to repeal New York’s sales-tax exemption for precious metals and bullion purchases over $1,000. This critical exemption, protected under Statute 1115(a)(27), remains intact following the passage of Senate Bill S3009, which enacts significant components of New York State’s fiscal plan for the 2025–2026 fiscal year. This year marks the 231st anniversary of the first regular silver coinage at the United States Mint in Philadelphia. It is true that there had been a coinage of about 2,000 half dismes in 1792, but that was a trial coinage, even though it was meant for circulation. There had been talk of beginning the silver coinage in 1793, but the forced closure of the Mint due to the deadly Yellow Fever epidemic from August through October made such plans purely academic. By mid-November 1793, however, Mint Director David Rittenhouse was once more thinking of ways to expedite the silver coinage. One of the main stumbling blocks to the commencement of silver operations was the arbitrarily high performance bonds set by Congress, in the 1792 Coinage Act, for the chief…

The United States Mint has created an amazing commemorative coinage program in the years since a humble start with the now-famous 1982 Washington half dollar. The themes have been varied, and the designs generally quite attractive. But the cynical collectors among us have probably claimed more than once that Congress, in its infinite desire to commemorate what they want, has gotten the Mint to produce far more designs and far more commems than the collector community can absorb, and probably more than the general public could even want. President Donald Trump has decided that, due to the cost of minting our 1-cent coins, production of the denomination should be stopped. It now appears the 5-cent, or nickel, coin may be next. In a recent House Appropriations Committee hearing, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said, “The nickel costs more than a nickel to produce, but we are looking at a material change, material changes in the materials that would reduce the cost to or below a nickel.” The metal composition of the cent changed in 1982. The treasury secretary is suggesting that, rather than dumping the nickel, changing its metal composition might make sense. Let’s get Pete Rose, nicknamed “Charlie Hustle,” on a United States coin! Ever since his death was announced last year on Sept. 30 at the age of 83, I have been contemplating how the United States should honor him with a special coin. I have been wanting to write about this for Viewpoint in hopes that other numismatists and Pete Rose fans would agree and support me on this idea. This month, there has been a consistent rise in all the 2025-dated coins, as well as the 2023 and 2024-dated coins. The 2023 American Women Quarters proof set had a tiny jump in the last month by a couple hundred. Not usually an amount to highlight, but we found it an interesting increase. It is common, if not expected, for there to be a small increase in most coins for a few years after release, but with the 2023-dated coins having been released two years ago, we don’t see a jump of more than about 50 from month to month.
