For this column, I’m going to take a crack at explaining “eye appeal.” The reason I’m writing on this subject is because I see an old problem becoming worse with regard to “modern” coins that are only modern for a specific time period. You know how it works. At one time, many of us could anticipate the issue of a bright red 1956 Lincoln cent to fill a hole in our Whitman album. Back then, that was a modern coin. I don’t consider these to be modern coins anymore, although others do. This presents a problem for the TPGSs, as it seems to me that inexpensive, modern coins are being graded differently. What we define as money is changing. The 1-cent coin appears to be on its way out, but specie money is once more becoming relevant. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently signed HB999, a state law that makes it legal to use gold and silver coins as lawful payment for just about anything in that state. According to the governor, “this legislation will authorize money services businesses like check cashers or PayPal to transmit and accept payment in gold and silver.” Florida can’t mint its own coins under Article 1 of the U.S. Constitution, but HB999 will make qualifying legal tender gold and silver coins exempt from Florida’s sales tax. In the period before World War I, Edward VII, the eldest son of Queen Victoria, came to the throne as British monarch in 1901 and continued to rule until his death in 1910. Walter Hazzard detailed the collectible coins issued under Edward’s reign in his article, “Canadian Coins of Edward VII,” for the February 1966 issue of Coins magazine. “King Edward the Seventh had the shortest reign of the five monarchs whose portraits have graced Canada’s coins,’ Hazzard wrote. “To a large extent, the period of his rule was a continuation of the late Victorian era. It is an article of faith among collectors that the quarter dollar of 1916-17 raised an uproar when it was first issued because the Standing Liberty figure was topless. Conventional wisdom then says that the outspoken complaints of a few self-appointed keepers of the public morals forced the government to put a chain-mail covering on the figure. The truth appears to be a little different. The beginning of the new quarter dollar, designed by famed artist Hermon MacNeil, dates back some years before 1916. The preceding design by Chief Engraver Charles E. What kind of coin collector are you? Have you ever thought about it? I’ve known collectors who say they’ve never sold a coin, that once they acquire it, it’s theirs forever. Or, till death do they part. I even corresponded with a long-time collector who was such a fan of Carson City coins (CC mint) that he wanted to be buried with his favorite one. Some of the most interesting and valuable of all U.S. coins are the ones about which we know the least. The 1841 quarter eagle qualifies as one of those mystery coins. Thinking about it, the 1841 has some awfully good and expensive company on a list of United States coins about which little is known. In fact, we accept a lot of numbers and information about U.S. coins, which, if one thinks about it and demands hard facts and not long-accepted stories, much of the information does not seem as compelling as a demanding judge might require.
