As I eagerly await to see what coins mints will produce for 2026, I have looked back at roughly 2,500 issues from 2025. A couple stood out and made me appreciate the process that went into making them. From the beginning stages to the final product, they were just beautiful. My favorite from the year is the “Predator or Prey in Shadow Box” coin (KM# 3567). The superimposed layers give the coin a different view as you move and examine it more closely. With all the coins minted in 2025, and as we are in the early beginnings of the Coin of the Year awards for 2026, we would love to know which issue you liked the most. Right now, as the price of silver climbs to heights that many collectors thought would never be seen, it’s tough to believe that there might still be bargains among any United States coins that are made of the precious metal. Certainly, the price tags associated with common date Morgan and Peace dollars have jumped up. Likewise with the popular Walking Liberty and Franklin half dollars. Long-time collectors are most likely grumbling and telling plenty of “back-in-my-day” stories about some time of far better prices. Alas, those days are gone, completely and totally. This report was gathered in mid-December, so we won’t have the end-of-the-year numbers until the next report, which is published in the first issue of February. As the year winds down, there weren’t any major changes to this month’s Mint Statistics. Most numbers went up by just a little bit, maintaining the steady rise they experience throughout the year after the initial release. The Morgan and Peace Silver Reverse Proof 2-Coin Set was added, with sales numbers that match the rest of the Morgan and Peace silver dollar sales this year. Mention gold coins of the United States to a non-collector, and the first thought is of the double eagle. It has long been a favorite of the investor and collector, who both view it with admiration. In the beginning, however, it was a great deal of trouble for all concerned. Prior to 1834, the coinage of gold was fitful at best in the United States. In that year, the law was changed, reducing the weight of gold coins, and this attracted gold from abroad. Gold coinage was heavier in the 1840s, but not at the rate envisioned by the Treasury. The 250th anniversary of American independence coin designs was recently unveiled. As might be predicted, there are politics swirling around what designs were chosen. The New York Times declared that the war on wokeness has come to the U.S. Mint. CNN was quick to point out that previously chosen Biden administration designs honoring women’s rights and the abolition of slavery had been replaced with “historical quarters featuring white men from the 18th and 19th centuries who were already well represented on currency and in historical tributes.” Others argue that this is the 250th anniversary of the entire nation’s independence, not the anniversary of women’s suffrage or of emancipation. Don’t we need to stay focused on the event at hand, then honor those other events when their anniversaries occur? The problem…

The Semiquincentennial (SemiQ) has collectors and non-collectors alike abuzz with excitement for 2026. There are so many different ways to celebrate this historic milestone, and as numismatic enthusiasts, we’ll do it the best way we know how: by collecting and studying coins. For 2026, there will be five new quarters, a new nickel, a dime, and a half dollar for circulation. There has been some discussion surrounding the new coins, as the final design themes are different from what was originally announced, but nevertheless, the Mint has released the designs for the new circulating coins. The five quarters will feature designs honoring the Mayflower Compact, Revolutionary War, Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the Gettysburg Address. The August 1966 issue of Coins magazine featured pieces on Mint Director Eva Adams and future Mint Chief Engraver Elizabeth Jones, as well as a letter-to-the-editor from Mint Chief Engraver Frank Gasparro.
