Rallying flows deep within the blood of many New Zealanders but in none more so than Hayden Paddon, who was written into the history books after he piloted his new-generation Hyundai i20 World Rally Championship (WRC) car to his first-ever rally victory in the FIA WRC at the Rally of Argentina (April 22–24, 2016), the first WRC round win for a Kiwi, and a victory that made fellow Kiwi and long-time co-driver John Kennard the oldest person to ever win a WRC round. Before the term ‘stance’ became popular and before many of us had even taken our first steps as a baby, groups of teen delinquents were tearing up the streets of Japan, pushing the boundaries of both motorcycle and car customization to the extreme. Models that were cheap back then but are now much more desirable — such as Nissan Hakosuka and Kenmeri Skylines; Fairlady Zs; and early model Toyota Soarers, Mark IIs, and Celicas — were hugely popular among this crowd. THE GOOD First of all, running audio cables doesn’t simply mean chucking whatever you have handy into the car and connecting up your components; no, cables are best left until last, and here’s why: incorrect cable choices will hurt your system. When it comes to working out what you need to run, there are three factors to consider: (1) the amount of amplification — this is how powerful your components are and how much energy they’ll need; (2) the length of the cable you’ll run; and (3) the diameter (gauge) of the cable being used, which determines its ability to carry current. But, for one weekend, and one weekend alone — April 23–24 — Pukekohe Park Raceway opened its gates to drifting fans as it hosted the Demon Energy D1NZ Drifting Championship grand final for the second year running — this coming after the D1NZ team won a long-standing legal battle that had banned the event from using the venue. The International Rally of Whangarei was round one of the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship (APRC), as well as the second round of the New Zealand Rally Championship. Taking place over the final weekend of April, it consisted of 16 special stages covering a total of 274.9km from south Whangarei to north Whangarei. The popularity of rallying in New Zealand certainly went up a notch following the World Rally Championship (WRC) win by Hayden Paddon and co-driver John Kennard in the Rally of Argentina just one week prior to this event.
