After three years dedicated hard work Stuart Phillips' Burrell Fermoy is back and looking like new! After it’s ‘on-off’ purchase from Russell Cook at Budley, Stuart Phillips from Cheshire set to in stripping 1904 Burrell 5hp DCC heavy duty road locomotive showman’s engine No. 3090 right down to nothing in 2021 as it was totally worn out. The boiler assembly went to Allison Engineering who replaced the boiler, firebox and most of the rear wrapper plate and other things. Meanwhile Stuart replaced the tender himself and Turner Gears at Wolverhampton set to sorting out the transmission. Stuart restored much himself and it all came together. On Saturday 23 September at the Michaelmas Fair, Bishops Castle, Shropshire the engine made its public debut, where it took part successfully in the afternoon…

The last time the editor saw this engine in steam was at the 1982 Astle Park Rally when 1928 Ransomes, Sims & Jefferies 4 CTR No. 39088 Ganymede UD2296 was on its last legs; it was then owned by Ron Madison. It was taken to Bob Lea’s and Peter Cauley’s premises for a tubeplate which was taken out. The engine ended up becoming very derelict and is now owned by Peter Cauley. It has recently been restored with work being carried out by Olli Woodcock who was seen at the controls at Onslow Park. Fortunately, the weather was once again kind, and the Stoke Row Steam and Vintage Club staged another huge show with over 900 exhibits in attendance. As in previous years the event took place on a large site at Whitchurch Hill near Reading. In addition to a splendid selection of steam exhibits the show has quite rightly built a reputation for gathering all manner of specialist vehicles associated with the timber industry, something which was such a huge part of the furniture-making industry which even today the Chilterns are known for. With the rolling countryside as a backdrop the rally is very much an active event with numerous demonstration areas and living history re-enactors on site. Magnus Volk was born in 1851, the son of a German clock maker. For most of his life he lived in Dyke Road in Brighton and was always interested in the latest developments in science and engineering, in particular in the potential uses afforded by the, then relatively new, source of power, electricity. Indeed it would be true to say that the young Magnus was a true visionary and, by the age of 29, he had become the first person to use electricity to power the lights in a house in the south of England. Other inventions quickly followed, including an addition to the famous clock tower in the centre of Brighton that featured a large ball that was linked to the clock mechanism and hydraulically hoisted to the top…

EAGLE In view of the US bald eagle motif, used by Case and others, it is not surprising that Eagle was a popular name for cars (at least ten recorded), tractors and a traction engine. None seem to have been connected and the tractor firm (1906 to the Second World War) situated in Appleton, Wisconsin was geographically far away from the traction engine of the same name listed in the early 1890s at Evansford, Indiana where it appears to have left very few traces. EASTMAN Henry F Eastman was a bicycle maker in Cleveland, Ohio, USA who tried an Electro Cycle three-wheeler in 1898. With the formation of the Eastman Automobile Co in 1900 it was single cylinder steam cars that took precedence. These were four-wheelers with tiller at front…

Thank you for all for the phone calls and pictures regarding page 47 of our September 2023 issue, the letter from Alan Davies ‘Those Were The Days’ and the two black-and-white pictures. The engine on the left turns out to be 1904 Burrell SD class DCC 7hp No. 2625 Lady Pride of England. This three-speed engine was new to Bucklands of Coventry and was painted green with vermilion wheels and carried a Moore’s pump when new. It was classed as a unique Burrell in other ways as well. We illustrate the engine here in another life. One of the people who phoned was Bill Gale (93) of 1921 Burrell DCC Scenic No. 3912 Pride of The Fens/Dragon fame. Bill ran the engine for the Chamberlain family for decades, did thousands…

Edward Wood, better known as Eddy, died recently, with his funeral taking place on Saturday 2 September. Eddy was one of a long line of Woods to live and work in Crockenhill near Swanley, Kent, they ran the family firm Thomas Wood & Sons of Crockenhill. The firm used a large number of road steam engines over the years, hiring and repairing them in a large belt-driven workshop which still exists today. Eddy spent a great many hours researching which engines the firm had owned and repaired. Eddy still owned two Burrell traction engines, Nos. 3586 Tam of 1914 and 3931 Molly of 1921, which were extensively rallied over the years, driving to most rallies rather than using low loaders. Sadly, both engines require repairs so could not be steamed…

A big personality on the vintage tractor scene for so long. Mike Patrick sadly passed away on 1 August aged 86, says Anne Bates. Mike was a big supporter of tractor runs and shows not only throughout the immediate locality of Herefordshire, the Marches and Wales but the rest of the UK as well. A successful businessman, he was the brains behind M S & E M Patrick Ltd, the waste disposal company known all over Herefordshire and the surrounding counties until 2019, previously he had worked as an estate manager and farmer. Mike was a regular participant in the annual Easter National Vintage Tractor Road Run and latterly the Welsh National Tractor Road Run in June, going to various locations across the United Kingdom, Wales and Ireland on his…

Harry Wilkes reports on some changes at the Black Country Live Steamers. Les Bromley, Club president since 2015, stepped down from the position. The BCLS would like to thank Les for his time as president. The BCLS wished to continue the tradition of electing one of the Club's founder members as president at its AGM in April: the Chair proposed that Keith Turley be elected as the Club's new president and this was passed unanimously by the floor. After a four-year break the show returned to a new venue near the picturesque village of Hyde End in the beautiful rolling Chiltern countryside. The new venue provided plenty of space for the exhibits and stalls to be nicely spaced out with a working area marked out for sawing demonstrations. The Vickery family’s splendid Burrell No. 2507 of 1902 was kept busy on Dave Knott’s saw bench. With plenty of space on the site engines were encouraged by the organisers to roam around, providing visitors with the opportunity to see the engines off their pegs in a very natural setting. Nineteen full-size engines were in attendance this year with a fine supporting cast of miniatures and commercials. The gala reunited two former Lambton locomotives, Kitson 0-6-2 No. 29 and Hunslet Austerity No. 60 along with the railway’s current visiting steam locomotive Hudswell Clarke Illingworth. Throughout the course of the three-day event a variety of passenger and demonstration goods trains were run along the two-mile railway. These included double and triple-headed trains along with top and tailing, and gravity shunting at the railway’s southern terminus at Percy Main using the railways 20t brake van. No. 29 was built in 1904 by Kitsons & Co of Leeds as works number 4263 for the Lambton, Hetton & Joicey Colliery Company’s Lambton Railway. Champion Road Machinery Ltd was one of the oldest all-Canadian construction equipment manufacturers whose predecessor company began building graders in Canada as far back as 1892. The company had an even earlier heritage with American roots going back to 1875. At that time one Samuel Pennock of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, was already involved in manufacturing agricultural and railway equipment and patented a two-wheeled grader for pulling behind a team of horses. He went on to improve the grader idea and invented and patented a four-wheel pull-type in 1877 which was known as ‘The American Champion.’ The Champion name of course stayed with the company and became part of its corporate name in later years. Known as S & M Pennock & Sons back in 1878 the firm prospered and enlarged…

The highlight has to be when the engines parade in the ring, definitely a spectacle not to be missed, and hundreds of spectators watched the show. The steamers enter the ring in pairs with the showman’s engines setting the scene. Here the Howard Brothers’ 1920 Fowler R3s No. 15632 Repulse and No. 15633 Renown had the honour of leading the way, both engines had been on the fairground with John Murphy during their working days, while equally impressive was Alistair Evans’ 1912 Burrell showman’s road locomotive No. 3413 The Philadelphia. This engine worked on the fairgrounds with Joseph Smith of Southampton and Alfred James of Fordingbridge until it was requisitioned for war work during WWII, while Grant Ellis’ 1924 Fowler 7hp showman’s road loco No. 15713 Pride of Shannon worked…

A year ago Maggie Astbury’s 1914 Fowler K7 12hp ploughing engine No. 13310 made its debut at Onslow Park. It was the last steam engine owned by the British Army in Germany. It was originally destined for Russia but was intercepted en-route by the German Army at the outbreak of WW1and ended up ploughing fenland at Bad Pyrmont. It became something of an icon, with the 45th Royal Engineers obtaining the The Steam Sapper in the early 1970s after it had been abandoned in a field. They carried out significant restoration work in time for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977; The Steam Sapper was their mascot until the regiment was disbanded in 2006. It was rather a frustrating job as the boiler work took ten years. The engine was…

Doing the rounds is David Davin’s 1930 Aveling & Porter AD class compound No. 14068 Hunslet which we caught up with at Onslow Park. The engine was new as a roller to West Riding County Council and was converted to a steam tractor in 1980 by Bob Oliver of Bishops Auckland. It was fitted with ex-bomber pneumatic tyres that were modified as time went on and the engine ended up as a green showman’s engine. At some rallies it had its own class in the programme, especially at Leeds bank holiday events. In Robert’s ownership it was offered for sale at the GDSF Southern Counties sale and at Cheffins. Hunslet is back as a more traditional Aveling style tractor/traction engine these days and is being enjoyed for what it is…

The funeral of Darren Izzard took place on Friday 25 August with over 300 people attending St Dunstan's Church, High Street, Mayfield, East Sussex, says Dave Vaughan. The coffin was borne on Darren's trailer behind Ebenezer, his 1923 Aveling & Porter C-type No. 10762 8 ton road roller which was crewed by Darren Chaffer and Alan Vokins, who was Darren's old crewmate and cousin. During the service tributes were paid to the memory of Darren by members of his family and Graham Chaffer, chairman of the Sussex Steam Engine Club, spoke warmly of his memories of Darren as a member of the SSEC and a regular rally attendee. Mention was made of his accordion playing in the beer tent and coming into the arena at Tinkers Park towing an organ…

It’s with deep sorrow that I have to report the passing of a very dear friend and loyal Ford and Fordson Association committee member, Margaret Badham, who I’ve personally known for over 30 years, writes the editor. Margaret’s family came from Wales and farming was very much in their blood. By the time Margaret was born they had moved to Much Wenlock in Shropshire and this area of England would be Margaret’s home for her entire 79 years. She married her partner Derek when she was 25 and she had been working as a nanny for a doctor and a vet. In fact, Derek tells me he broke off an engagement to another lady to marry Margaret and they went on to have 54 years of very happy married life…

Work was also carried out on the cylinders, with new piston rings being required as the originals were worn, “The new ones were fabricated by HP Rings Ltd of Chesterfield,” Francis said. It was a similar story with the gears, with new ones being made by Bells Gears Ltd of Sheffield, and then returned to Thirsk where they were fitted. Here though, the gearing was changed, “The new second gear was made at a slightly higher ratio than the original,” Francis went on, “So that instead of travelling at the previous 6mph, the engine’s speed had now increased to 10mph.” The engine’s performance also improved after the wheels were sent to Jimmer Marsh of West Sussex to be rubbered, “He did an excellent job,” Francis said. With such variety of machines, participants scattered themselves apart before reconvening for a tea break on the lawn before the magnificent Gothic Revival façade of Chiddingstone Castle. Cars reappeared at odd intervals, the powerful Edwardian tourers obviously having enjoyed a brisk run, while the early single-cylinder voiturettes assumed a more leisurely pace. Once refreshed, the second leg took the veterans through the centre of Edenbridge, where they drew plenty of admiring glances, before leading them to the finish at Hever Castle. Arranged on the lawn by the outer moat, the cars were well-placed to be seen and appreciated by the hundreds of day-trippers and tourists who swarmed the grounds. Among the De Dion Boutons and Darracqs could be seen examples from less familiar marques, such as Gladiator, Conrad and Wolseley-Siddeley.…

Starting with the full-sized engines, first up was NO 372, a 1913 Fowler Type AA6 16hp ploughing engine No. 13881 that was new to Lord Rayleigh Estates in Essex, before being bought by the Flear family in 1979. Maintenance included a new firebox being fitted during the winter of 1986/87. That was followed by a couple of rollers which had worked for councils in Yorkshire. The first was David Hare’s 1916 Aveling & Porter BS 5hp road roller No. 8754 The Squire of Tong, new to Northallerton RDC before they were taken over by North Yorkshire CC in 1930. After that ‘little diversion,’ we made our way back to the station and caught the Dublin train back the way we had previously come and got off with our bikes at Mullingar where we made our way under the bridge by the station to closely examine the traction engine which we had seen previously from the train. As we approached it, we discovered that it also was also a Leeds-built Fowler. The oval Fowler worksplate was fortunately still sitting on the boiler side and this revealed it to be Fowler No. 11114. It’s purpose there was to steam tar for local road repairs when delivered by rail - since railway tank wagons were in the adjoining sidings at the higher rail level and there was a pipe hanging down the…
