Jeff Burgess has just put up for sale his fully rebuilt 1917 Fowler BB No. 14712Wilbur, following the fact he has to totally rebuild his 1916 Burrell 7hp single-cylinder traction engine No. 3728 Prince, now that much of the boiler assembly has been condemned by the boiler inspector after the removal of the firebox. Wilbur features a brand new boiler, tubeplate and so much more and is in first class order and has been back on the rally scene since the Hadlow Down Rally which we see it at here on 1 June. The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC) has announced the appointment of the Rt Hon. Sir Greg Knight as President. Sir Greg Knight was born in Leicestershire. He qualified as a solicitor and, for ten years, ran his own law practice. He has been a lifelong classic car fan and has owned many stunning examples. Indeed, he entered Parliament in 1983, arriving in style in his Jensen Interceptor Mk III. Sir Greg was the Conservative MP for East Yorkshire from 2001 to 2024, having previously served as the MP for Derby North from 1983 to 1997. While in opposition, he was a Shadow Minister for Transport and served as a government minister, Deputy Chief Whip, and later Minister of State for Industry and Vice-Chamberlain. From Richard Hemington comes the good news that the East Anglian Traction Engine Society is joining forces with the excellent Ipswich Transport Museum to stage a reunion of Ransomes Sims & Jefferies engines in the city of their birth. The event is supported by Ransomes Jacobsen, successors to RSJ. As well as engines in steam at the Museum, plans for the weekend event include a road run through the city taking in the historic waterfront and the site of RSJ’s Orwell Works where the engines were built. DVLA has announced a new service update that allows motorists to tax their vehicle even if they have lost their V5C (log book) and their vehicle tax reminder letter (V11). Previously, customers who had lost these documents would have had to wait up to five days for a replacement V5C to arrive, or phone DVLA’s Contact Centre to tax their vehicle. This latest update will allow customers to apply online for a new V5C and tax their vehicle at the same time. This is the first time that DVLA has linked their online registration service with their online licensing service, allowing the customer to self-serve through the two digital channels in one seamless customer journey. The results of elections for all the House of Commons Select Committees have been announced, with Ruth Cadbury, MP for Brentford and Isleworth, elected as chair of the Transport committee. In all, four MPs stood in the election for the Transport Committee chair: Catherine Atkinson (Derby North), Fabian Hamilton (Leeds North East) and Grahame Morris (Easington). The new Chair was elected from the Labour party under the allocation of committee chairs to political parties, which was agreed by the House on 30 July 2024. Ruth Cadbury first won her seat for Labour in 2015, and has been on the Transport Committee since October 2018. It was great for us to catch up with Tim Watson, a keen stationary engine owner along with his family since he was a nipper, at the excellent Kettering Vintage Rally & Steam Fayre on 21 September, before the rain came and made the Sunday a total washout. Tim was showing two of his original Associated engines, including a 1915 8hp Foreman which was only imported to the UK in 2023 from Michigan. In the late afternoon light rain it kept on going and looked a wonderful sight with its 42in flywheel working well and the factory portable frame and wheels making it so much easier to get about. Christie’s announced on 12 September that they had come to an agreement to buy the American Gooding & Company, a high class and well-respected motor auction house set up in 2003 and run by David Gooding and his wife Dawn Ahrens. The move by Christie’s, who left the car market under a cloud in 2007, is to diversify its offerings from the softening art market. The auction house is owned by Artémis, the holding company of the French Pinault family. They issued a statement that said, “The purchase marks a significant milestone for Christie’s, establishing its position in the rapidly expanding classic and collector car market”. Guillaume Cerutti, chief executive of Christie’s, told the Financial Times the auction house is making the acquisition at a time when its “luxury divisions…

It’s with great sadness that we have to report the passing of the amazing Ron Greet of Broadhempston, Devon. He died at his home, with his loving family and dogs by his side, on Wednesday 18 September 2024, aged 79 years. Those of you who were looking for classic and vintage tractor parts more than likely came in contact with Ron regularly and justifiably have nothing but good to say about him. Ron had endured a number of medical issues for 40 years or so, but, he made the best of his situation. He leaves a widow, Gill, and their six children. The funeral service was held at St Peter and St Paul's Church, Broadhempston on Tuesday 15 October and was packed to capacity, followed by a private cremation. Sean…

Ricky Sutcliffe writes that Stephen Hubbuck kindly agreed to bring his 1921 Leyland RAF Type to the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre Showbus event. This is now on loan to the centre for a one year rolling agreement, to be used in and around the centre and museum. The intention is to have it on display in the new vehicle workshop and museum, but also for it to be driven out to the main station on event days. Leyland Motors, during World War 1, produced many vehicles for the war effort, and over 3000 of these were reconstructed after the War by Leyland at their Ham Works, Kingston, to become known as the Leyland RAF Type. Held over 30 August-1 September the 13th Hampton Court Palace Concours of Elegance is classed as the UKs best and most prestigious concours event. Held in the beautiful surroundings of the well-maintained gardens with the fountain as the centre piece of the activity, some 14,000 people attended over the three days. The 61 entrants and the various club and sales stands and competitions brought the number of fine machines on show to approximately 400, so there was much to look at! It was good to talk about the vehicles with the people presenting them, some on behalf of the owners who live all around the world. Aclassic 1965 Leyland Leopard re-runs Route 71 Horsham to Littlehampton and back. James Freeman reports for Old Glory. After two weeks of heavy downpours, the morning of Saturday 28 September dawned spectacularly bright and sunny, with clear blue skies – just right for a day out to the seaside! Paul Landymore and Paul Llewellyn had long been planning a celebratory outing to rekindle long-lost memories of the lengthy cross-country Southdown route from Horsham via Christ’s Hospital, Storrington, Amberley and Arundel to Littlehampton – route 71, introduced way back in the summer of 1945. Two former Southdown buses were planned to run the route, a 1965 Leyland Leopard with Marshall bodywork, provided by long-time Southdown driver Norman Stanbridge, together with a 1976 Leyland National owned by Paul Llewellyn. It was on the first weekend in August 2014 that a gathering of six surviving Henton’s engines were brought together at the Gloucestershire Vintage & Country Extravaganza at South Cerney Airfield, put together by Garry Nelson. Things were a little slow getting going on the Friday with sunshine and showery weather, it was not until late Friday afternoon that they lined up together outside the Road Locomotive Society’s tent. Jack Henton had a good relationship with Burrell’s over the years and used six engines of this make in the fleet and all but one survive today. On the Saturday it was rather wetter in the morning, but cleared up for the afternoon when the engines were lined up together again. What a sight it was and one certainly had to…

Saturday 19 October saw 1927 Sentinel Super steam waggon No. 6725 of the G J Wooley family sell for £67,000 at the very wet Cheffins Vintage Collective. The engine was in the colours of its original owners Edward Derbyshire of Liverpool. The waggon had been off the road since 2012 when the engine was overhauled and the boiler stripped. On inspection at the sale it looks as though it needs a new inner firebox and boiler, but that's for the boiler inspector to decide, however the assembly will set you back at least £34,000 so the price the waggon made is on the mark.…

On Saturday 21 September 2024, the Lincolnshire Coast Light Railway held its first event dedicated to the rolling stock from the First World War which it curates. Trains ran from 11am until 3pm and alternated a diesel-hauled passenger train with a variety of First World War trains with stock including Class P rations wagons, Class D all-purpose bogie wagons (troops, munitions, stretchers, etc.) and the Railway's unique WWI ambulance wagon. The event was blessed with superb sunny weather and a decent turnout. The highlight of the day was a double-headed train hauled by WWI era bow-framed Simplex Nocton and WWII era Simplex No. 6 and comprising three WWI D wagons and the sole surviving WWI ambulance van, populated with men of the Hull Rifles, a WWI living history group. ERTL Requiring a particularly big stocking is the 1/16 scale diecast Ford 881 Select-O-Speed Wide Front tractor in red and beige in ERTL’s Prestige range [1], retailing for £155.99. The Ford 881 was the top of the 801 Powermaster series, built from 1958-62. It had the Select-O-Speed full power-shift transmission allowing the driver to shift between ten forward and two reverse gears using a selector lever under the dash, without a clutch. There was an ‘inching pedal’ for manoeuvring, effectively operating as a semi-automatic system. It had a two-speed independent power take off and a three-point hitch. As always the pioneering Little Casterton and now Great Casterton Working events are unique on the British rally calendar and it was no different on 21-22 September. Now staged on Brian Knight’s land where early agricultural machinery was seen working, from combining, threshing to ploughing. Saturday’s weather was wonderful, however on the Sunday, when Old Glory SE could get there, the day was sadly a washout and it was all over by lunchtime for most. However, as always, there was a wonderful selection of stationary engines there. These included the Coopers ex Australian 1903 Hornsby – Akroyd 10.5hp No. 6986, which is thought to have been manufactured in 1898 as it’s of a slightly earlier design. Mark Garbutt says, reading the September issue of Stationary Engine magazine I saw the article featuring a Demon engine and thought fellow enthusiasts might like to see our Bagnall Ltd Demon engine. It’s a BRV 5hp No. 109, which was saved from being scrapped back in the mid-1960s by my uncle, Bill Waghorn. This engine had been part of an engine collection owned by Thomas Yeats, a retired railway engineer who had engineering workshops built in his garden at Lenham Heath, Maidstone, Kent. In 1977 I contacted Allen Civil; an ex Bagnall apprentice who was able to provide some information on these engines. He was able to tell me that our engine was manufactured by the mighty WG Bagnall Ltd engineers, at the Castle Engine Works, Stafford. Their main business…

They don’t come up very often, but the Hagerty-owned Broad Arrow Auctions sale held its third sale during Monterey motoring week on 14-15 August at the Monterey Jet Center, California. The sale saw a total of $71.5 million change hands with 85 percent of the lots sold. A 1904 Turner-Miesse 10hp Tonneau steam car was of interest to us - this was a 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance winner and a London to Brighton runner for many years. The car had been in the same ownership for 24 years and sold for £68,714 on the day. The Turner-Miesse is a Belgian design made under licence by Turner of Wolverhampton. They started making petrol cars in 1906 with the Seymour-Turner engine, but also made the steamers until about 1911. However the…

On Saturday 21 September it seemed like the whole of Ireland had descended on Berry Farm, Stoke Poges, Slough, Berkshire for the well-run and promoted Commercial Vehicle Auctions’ dispersal sale of the late Tony McGovern’s collection. Tony came from a farm in County Leitrim, Republic of Ireland to the UK when just 17. He started as a labourer then lorry driver where he delivered ‘man huts’ to road repair sites. With his brother Peter they started a haulage business in 1967 that with their hard work and contacts just grew and grew. They ended up with their own waste site that got taken over with the HS2 project. The business was sold in 2018 but by then they had a superb and impressive fleet of preserved lorries and tractors which…
