PS Waverley, the world’s last sea-going paddle steamer, is backing Railway 200, the national celebration of the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1825. Carrying the year-long celebration event’s logo on its website and publications, Waverley Excursions Ltd is reminding passengers that the ship was built in 1947 by the London & North Eastern Railway, and is every inch a railway boat. OXFORD DIECAST Oxford’s new 1/76 scale Bedford CF van has been issued in white, yellow and red Gunn JCB Parts Delivery Service livery [1], selling for £9.95. The CF was launched in 1969, whilst the model’s T-registration represents a 1978 vehicle, this one a sliding door type (although they don’t, of course, slide on the model). Oxford have captured the shape well and there is their usual good standard of detailing at this scale, with tiny Bedford badges and a Griffin badge in the centre of the bonnet. The Gunn brothers founded the firm in 1890. In 1958 it became one of the first JCB dealers and still operates today, with six depots in the British Isles including their headquarters in Altrincham, Cheshire. The Muzeum Zemědělské Techniky (Museum of Agricultural Technology) which is just south of the town of Č áslav was on the agenda to visit by Michael Ward when in Europe last year. There, he discovered a couple of Fowler ploughing engines in the museum’s collection: P řemysl and Libuše. The former is a Z5 Class, No. 10675 of 1905, whilst the year of manufacture and works number of the latter have currently not been established. However, it’s known that the Steam Plough Club have made extensive efforts in an attempt to identify Libuše but unfortunately, so far, these have proved unsuccessful. Logic says that it’s likely to be the pair of P řemysl - i.e. No. 10674-since both engines were acquired by the museum in 1972 from JZD Katusice and…

Well we are into March and I have already been to four events where stationary engines have been featured. SE owners are a hardy lot, that’s for sure. In these pages of the SE April issue we have contributors from all over the world taking part in our hobby, which is second only to car collectors in Australia when you get down to it. I have been lucky enough to have taken parties to that country a good number of times over the years and have always enjoyed the stationary engines at shows and private collections. Alan C Cullen says the first outdoor event for The Sussex and Kent Weald Stationary Engine Group, now in its 25 year, took place on Saturday 15 February. The day began with a bright red sky, but a very chilly wind, which warmed up to the heady heights of 3 degrees above freezing. But this did not deter the dozen engine men who had booked in for this display at The British Garden Centre at Paddock Wood, Kent and the space we are allocated soon became alive with the sight and sound of engines running. The biggest early May bank holiday weekend event takes place on 4-5 May at Stradsett Hall, Downham Market, Norfolk. This year the event will feature 100 years of Caterpillar, which is being organised by Austin West who is making great progress with this very special display. With the death of Ian Howitt, age 76, at the end of July after a long illness, the West Riding of Yorkshire lost one of its colourful and charismatic characters. Very many years ago, Ian started an engineering business in Armley, Leeds and later moved to larger premises at Crofton, near Wakefield. He developed a life-long interest in the Talyllyn Railway in mid-Wales and it was perhaps inevitable that when some engineering work was required there from time to time, it was Ian who undertook the task. He was extremely proud of his record of attending 50 consecutive Annual General Meetings of the railway, such was his dedication in that direction. Derek Adams has compiled this tribute to Malcolm Hobbs who passed away at the end of December age 94. Malcolm was a well-known man of steam and wind power, based in east Kent his wealth of knowledge on both subjects will be sorely missed as will his skills in carpentry and decorative painting to name but a few things. He was involved with the steam preservation movement and was involved in organising east Kent rallies, starting in the mid-1960s. Through Hobbs & Debling he went on to be involved with a late type AB Aveling & Porter steam roller and then own in 1964 1912 Marshall No. 59435, a 7hp traction engine which is now called Uncle George and lives in County Carlow, Republic of Ireland. In the early hours of 14 February I was reading the February 1965 issue of Motor Sport magazine, which under the esteemed editorship of Bill Boddy didn’t just cover modern motor racing, but many vintage matters of all kinds. In fact at the time Motor Sport was the bestselling monthly motoring magazine of its kind and even covered some road steam matters along the way. In the Books Reviews page Bill Boddy reviews R A Whitehead’s Garretts of Leiston and as it’s 60 years ago I thought we would run the review in Old Glory, courtesy of Motor Sport as the hardback book is still available. Through thick and thin the show has weathered the storms and proved to be a huge hit in 2025 when no less than 16,000 people came to the Kelsey Media-staged show. It took some people two hours to get on to the site owing to the traffic. The tractor entry was up by 162 tractors as were other exhibits, including the model displays. An added bonus was the new exhibition hall here, which was just full of the Case-IH UK Club’s tractors. Thanks to Club editor Peter Williams, Geoff Harrison and chairman Mark Larengo they were celebrating the 40th anniversary since J I Case joined together with International Harvester Co to form what was at the time the largest agricultural machinery company in the world. The editor says: It was in July 2000 that I visited the Three Counties Showground, Malvern, thanks to the late Michael Hadley, and signed the contract to stage the first Tractor World Show in March 2001. However, three days before the show I had to cancel it, owning to Foot and Mouth disease. I myself flew out to Australia, where I met up with 78 people from the Tractor & Machinery Holiday Club as we toured Australia and New Zealand, we saw many exciting stationary engines along the way. In fact, Tractor World did not actually start until 2002. Pakenham Water Mill in Suffolk was built in 1831 and Clement Goodrich was the miller in 1846, when he took on an apprentice. The mill came into the ownership of the Bryant family in 1885. A steam engine was used as auxiliary power. However that all changed in 1938 when a second hand 1904 Blackstone No. 45442 17hp engine superseded it after boiler problems with the steamer says Angela and Nigel Salmon. In 1947, the mill was nearly tailwinded, but the miller managed to turn the cap in time to avoid this happening. The mill was restored in 1950, with a new weatherbeam fitted by Amos Clarke, the Ipswich millwright. At this time the swing-pot neck bearing from Buxhall Mill was installed. Well, I have just returned from Tractor World at Malvern held over the last weekend of February. Considering the way the economy is, it’s just amazing that the show saw a huge record crowd of over 16,000 people attend and we had just over 200 extra exhibits at the show. In addition the huge range of trade stands made this the biggest show of its type in the UK today, which I first started in 2002. It was pleasing to meet a good number of Old Glory readers at the show over the two days. With such a huge crowd it caused problems with traffic similar to what the Welland Steam & Country Show experienced in 2023. Already we have held meetings over the matter and next year we will…

The venerable Aveling & Porter R10 10-ton road roller No. 2317, dating from 6 October 1887, was new to Altringham Corporation then to C Price & Sons (Lancashire Road Rolling Co) who sold it to Allen and Sons, Oxford who gave it fleet No.30. It was totally rebuilt by Allen’s at this period with a new boiler assembly that is rather different to when it was made in 1887 at Rochester, Kent. The engine was sold in 1934 to F J Williams of Bucknell in Shropshire who used it for some years. Allison Engineering have replaced the tubeplate, firebox, foundation ring and most of the backhead for current owner Will Harland and it headed off to Will’s establishment over the New Year. 2025 will be a special year of exciting celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of Anderton Boat Lift, the world’s first major commercial boat lift, Cheshire’s Cathedral of Canals in Northwich. Raising the roof at this unique scheduled monument, the Canal & River Trust charity will be transporting visitors back in time to 1875 by hosting a spectacular Victorian Fair over the anniversary weekend of 25-27 July. The Leyland Society was formed in 1998 with the aim of preserving the heritage of Britain’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer for future generations to appreciate. Each year the Society holds a ‘Leyland Gathering’ where owners of Leyland buses and lorries (and those produced by the Leyland Group) can display their vehicles to members of the public. This year we are pleased to announce that our Gathering will be held at Rowsley South Station on the Peak Rail Heritage Railway near Matlock, Derbyshire on Sunday 29 June. The line forms part of the old Midland Railway line between Manchester Central and London St Pancras which closed in 1968. Whilst walking along the Rua Augusta in Lisbon, Old Glory correspondent Phil Barnes passed the Santa Justa vertical street elevador (lift), where the attached photos were taken in the extremely tight confines of the area’s buildings. The story of the Santa Justa lift starts in 1896 when the council proposed the construction of this ‘machine.’ The lift was designed by the Portuguese engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard (who was of French parentage and an apprentice of Gustave Eiffel of tower fame) and construction started in 1900 under his guidance. The lift’s tower is manufactured from wrought iron with decorative filigree embellishments which gives it a ‘Neo-Gothic’ look. The workings of the lift consist of two wooden cabins which each have a capacity for 29 people and which are linked together…

As always, the place to be the last weekend in January is the Somerset Vintage and Classic Show held at the beleaguered Bath & West Showground, just outside Shepton Mallet, Somerset. While there were high winds in many places of the UK, for a change the south west got away with it. In fact the build up day had brilliant sunny weather. It was not so warm over the weekend but it stayed dry. There was a huge crowd, but, in my opinion, the catering let the event badly down. The stationary engine selection on show unfortunately gets smaller each year, which is such a pity, as there is plenty of room for them all inside. I first saw a Felsted School engine in the stationary line up at the excellent Haddenham Steam Rally nearly 40 years ago and was immediately fascinated by the story behind what I’ve thought to be a good looking engine ever since, says Ash Hofert. Over the years a limited amount of information came to light about these engines via the pages of Stationary Engine Magazine and the Kelsey Publishing A-Z Of British Stationary Engines which was put together by Patrick Knight and Gordon Wright. The engines were built at the Felsted School in Essex between 1900-1914 from castings produced at a foundry local to the school, my research has led to my thinking this may have been the Rayne Foundry due to its close proximity.
