Original Stephenson S&DR 0-4-0 No. 1 Locomotion has returned to Darlington for the ‘Railway Pioneers’ exhibition at the recently renovated former S&DR Hopetown Carriage Works. It is appearing alongside two replicas of locomotives from the same era, Richard Trevithick’s Pennydarren locomotive from 1803, courtesy of the Museum of Wales, and John Buddle and William Chapman’s Steam Elephant of 1815, which has been borrowed from Beamish Museum.
The exhibition, which is free of change, also showcases the advancement of rail technology in the early 19th century and especially that leading to the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1825.
