AS WE ALL KNOW, kitchens in older houses have rarely escaped remodeling. So how do you design a kitchen that will still look good and function well in twenty years? (1) Rely on such timeless materials as wood and stone. Downplay anachronistic contemporary materials by keeping design simple or by incorporating period conventions—trimming out laminate counters in wood, for example, or using honed rather than polished granite. (2) For cabinets and millwork, take design cues from your dining room, or from an old pantry in the house or the neighborhood. CURTAINS AND CARPETS, pillows and fringe add softness, comfort, and texture. They muffle sound. They round out a dominant color scheme, or introduce accent spots for contrast. They suggest a style or period by virtue of their design, color, volume, material, and trimmings. A house without textiles is not yet furnished. Although the best late-Victorian rooms are heavily layered, textiles do not have to be excessive to be effective. The homespun, damasks, and quilts of early American interiors added color and comfort without fussiness. Similarly, the American Arts & Crafts movement (ca.1895–1930) relied on appliqued and stenciled pillows, embroidered window curtains and portieres (or interior doorway curtains), stenciled table scarves, and plush carpets. WOOD FLOORS suggest durability even as they convey understated beauty. It’s possible to buy wood species tapped out a century ago, including longleaf heart pine and chestnut. Thanks to reclamation efforts and re-milling, along with the salvaging of river-bottom logs, wide-plank floorboards are available from specialty lumber companies. An engineered wood floor, factory-finished and often recommended over radiant heat, gives you the real-wood look at less cost. Don’t assume that all resilient flooring is modern, or vinyl.
