“This is the last piece in our collection,” the film-director owner remembers thinking when the family first toured the house. Stickley at 120 A Brief Company History Did you know that today’s Stickley is a descendant of different companies founded by the five Stickley brothers—Gustav, Albert, Leopold and John George, and Charles? The most influential were eldest brother Gustav Stickley of Craftsman Workshops in Syracuse, and Leopold and John George Stickley, who founded L. & J.G. Stickley in nearby Fayetteville in 1907. This house in Greene County, New York, been faithfully restored, from its foundation and structure to exterior elements and trim inside. The house had suffered from neglect and then, in 2011, from the devastation of Hurricane Irene. With an L-shaped footprint, the big house boasts 10 bedrooms. The building probably dates to ca. 1836, though the Italianate touches may have come a bit later. It’s a country example of a Tuscan Villa—defined by the boxlike symmetry, a heavily bracketed cornice, and the belvedere on the roof. Design guidelines suggest 60 square feet, but most half baths in old houses are considerably smaller. Common sense holds 25 square feet to be a comfortable minimum. FIXTURES ON ONE WALL This is a common layout because it’s cheaper and easier to install plumbing on just one wall. But it’s not the most comfortable or efficient in use. BY THE 1870s, the tripartite treatment was fashionable: walls divided into dado (or wainscot) below the chair rail, fill or field section, and frieze at the top of the wall. Ceilings, too, were decorated. Just a generation later, Colonial Revival rooms featured off-whites, cream, and grey. Whatever the period, once you have discovered the decorated wall—time-honored paint techniques and printed papers, embossed surfaces, ornamental plaster, carved wood—white walls may come to feel like the absence of finish. PERIOD ROOMS are the goal of a very small niche of old-house owners. Most of us take an eclectic approach, mixing handed-down furniture and comfortable pieces with the occasional splurge. Secondary Glazing  Windows in most homes aren’t as leaky as replacement-window manufacturers would have you believe. Adding interior window inserts or exterior storm windows saves on energy costs without sacrificing the original window sash or casement. They cost less, too: about one-third to one-half that of replacement windows. Sometimes called thermal compression windows, interior inserts can be made of polycarbonate, acrylic, or glass. Panels typically install in the inner frame of an existing window by spring tension, flexible compression, or magnetic attachment. They improve air tightness and interior comfort because they mitigate infiltration and prevent convection drafts. Thermal compression windows made with acrylic, including those from Indow and Innerglass, are arguably better insulators than glass and weigh half as much.
