He learned the craft of screen printing after the sale, working nights with the two previous owners. “I like the pattern end of it,” he says. “Patterns just fall naturally for me. And I like the history behind it, too.” Bassett & Vollum was founded in Chicago by Emile Bassett and George Vollum, in 1936. A third partner, George Funke, brought in hand-blocked patterns from France and commissioned national and international designers—notably Chicagoan Edgar Miller—to design new collections. His background as a professional photographer allowed him to “see” a piece just by looking at a photograph, he says. THE CA. 1920 row house, in the Fairmount neighborhood of Philadelphia, needed major repairs; it had been gutted by a fire in the 1970s. The subsequent remodeling made no attempt at a period look: “It was a DIY ‘Mediterranean’-style job with tiled counter tops and harvest-gold appliances,” says homeowner Lynne Gery; she and her husband, Daniel Womer, bought the house in 1986. “I’d approached a few contractors over the years,” Lynne explains, “but I never met anyone I felt comfortable with. As Seattle’s population burgeoned, a local developer hired the Olmsted Brothers firm, in 1905, to design a park-like neighborhood, with curving, tree-lined boulevards, on what had been the site of logging activity and sawmills, southeast of downtown. The area was named Mount Baker owing to its views north over Lake Washington to that towering volcano in the Cascade Mountains.
