The houses lining Nantucket’s Main Street brim with impeccably maintained character. But when clients of interior designer Kristin Paton purchased their own slice of Main, the builder-grade, center-entrance colonial cried out for a hefty dose of architectural integrity (aka charm). Her clients, a family of five with college-age kids, loved the location near town but craved more elegance, polish, and livability indoors and out. “Our goal was to give this house an imagined history,” explains Paton, whose Boston-based firm specializes in full-service interior architecture and design. AN INTERVIEW with architect Jeffrey Dungan is not pedagogical, it’s fun. One minute he’s quoting Mark Twain and the next he’s rhapsodizing about Le Corbusier’s friend, 20th-century industrialist/architect Jean Prouvé. When you knit together these references along with his nods to Rodin, it all adds up to how and why his white-plaster confection, The Sandcastle, came to be. It’s “sculpture that you live in,” says Dungan. The style of this 5,000-square-foot, four-level Alys Beach, Florida, house is as capricious as Dungan’s manner of describing it. In the upscale community between Destin and Panama City, the signature white-stucco houses have been referred to as evoking the essence of Italian or Grecian beach towns. A BRAND-NEW resident has shown up On Brays Island, South Carolina: the traditional-style guest cottage that the owners affectionately call Little Lodge. Inspired by the iconic works of English architects C.F.A. Voysey and Edwin Lutyens, Little Lodge truly lives up its mellifluous moniker, as it is only 1,400 square feet. From hand-fired clinker brick and honed Belgian bluestone to bespoke craftsmanship, the cottage, designed by architect Peter Block, is firmly rooted in Arts & Crafts tradition. “It embodies the ‘new old house’ ethos,” says interior designer Beth Webb, whose namesake Atlanta-based studio was commissioned to create the kitchen and adjacent dining room. “It’s meant to feel timeless rather than tied to a specific period.
