In 2009, Jon Rose was nearing 30. After spending his entire adult life as a pro surfer, he began searching for the next chapter in his story. He thought he might try photography or woodworking. “Whatever I did, I wanted to have an excuse to go back to the places I’d surfed around the world that really meant something to me,” he says. Then he started thinking about his father, Jack. In 2004, the Laguna Beach carpenter was so moved by a trip to Kenya, that he started a non-profit that helps villagers catch and filter rainwater. ALMOST TWO decades have passed since hydraulic disc brakes came to mountain bikes, and the technology is now ubiquitous on dirt. So it wasn’t a stretch to think that it would quickly make its way onto pavement as well, given the significant performance benefits over calipers.
