THE BIG-BOX RETAILER Lowes sells do-it-yourself kits that let you monitor, control, and (to a lesser extent) secure your home via the cloud. All the kits have the Iris Hub, which connects to your router. I tried the $299 Smart Kit, which also has two door/window sensors, a motion sensor, a wireless keypad, a plug-in lighting-control module, a programmable thermostat, and a range extender.
You can control Iris from a computer, a smartphone, or a tablet, and add sensors, controls, IP cameras, and more. A Lowes spokesperson says the company plans to add entry-lock support soon.
