MICROSOFT’S BING SEARCH engine got a recent makeover befitting the modern (Windows 8) interface and bringing the engine into the “One Microsoft” fold (go.pcworld.com/onems). The refresh includes redesigns of Google-like features that Bing already offers. Microsoft says it has improved its predictive search capabilities as you type your query. Dubbed “Page Zero,” it means Bing can supply information before you see a complete page of search results. Similar to Google Instant, Bing will show you popular searches that others have done based on your keywords. So you might see suggestions for singer Katy Perry such as ‘Katy Perry songs,’ or ‘Katy Perry music videos’ popping up as you type. AS THE NAME implies, Apple’s iPhone 5s (go.pcworld.com/apple5s) doesn’t look much different from the iPhone 5. But the handset’s mostly static exterior belies the numerous changes inside. Last year’s “slate” model has been displaced by a slightly lighter “space gray” version, but more notably the white-and-silver model has been joined by a white-and-gold variation. I prefer the darker look of space gray, but the gold iPhone is attractive and tasteful. The display—a 4-inch-diagonal, 1136-by-640-pixel display at 326 ppi, or Retina resolution—is essentially the same. A RUGGEDIZED VERSION of the Galaxy S4, Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Active (go.pcworld.com/s4active) is for people who want a high-end handset but don’t want it to get in the way of their active lifestyle. INTEL SUCCESSFULLY OVERCLOCKED one of its SSDs by 10 percent, overall (the percentage increase of the overclock itself was more than 50 percent), at its Intel Developer Forum this year. It’s unclear, however, whether the company will ever formally release the technology to market. Intel representatives dialed up the clock speed on the memory controller governing its SSDs from 400MHz to 625MHz at IDF. LENOVO’S C540 TOUCH is one of the two best all-in-one PCs we’ve reviewed recently—the other one being the Toshiba PX35t-A2210 (reviewed on page 91). Still, it does have some drawbacks.
