Most Australians are familiar with the Western names of the seasons – summer, autumn, winter and spring – but how many of us know that different Indigenous groups in Australia have different seasons?
In Western Australia, for example, the Bardi Jaawi people and the Yawuru people both identify six seasons. The Yawuru call their six seasons—Man-gala, Marrul, Wirralburu, Barrgana, Wirlburu and Laja, and the Jaawi call theirs – Mankal, Ngaladany, Irrablboo, Barrgana, Jalalay and…
