Tell us a bit about your food hampers… Humble Samplers are ethical, sustainable and all about supporting microbusinesses run by people who aren’t normally featured in mainstream hampers or shops. The majority of the businesses [we support] are women-owned, with a large proportion from migrant and refugee backgrounds. Each hamper also includes at least one product made by an Aboriginal-owned business. Why is diversity such an issue in the food industry? Unfortunately the food ecosystem is set up to favour white, educated, English-speaking males. Acceptance of yourself, a situation, another person, feels so good – but it isn’t always easy to reach. When you’re growing up and forming your sense of self, every casual comment adds up. A racist comment, a transphobic joke, a slur whispered under someone’s breath… it all piles up in the back of your brain, feeding the negative perceptions you hold about aspects of your identity. That’s why coming out to yourself is by far the hardest thing to do. At least it was for me. What inspires your art and craft? I’m super inspired by colour. I like to push the boundaries and try to do something different. I make crocheted sculptural pieces l refer to as yarnidermy (faux taxidermy made with crochet). And, of course, l love to work in black, yellow and red to celebrate my culture. I spent over 40 hours on my phone last week. Impassive and dispassionate, dead-eyed scrolling. What first led you to photography? When I was a kid, I was obsessed with disposable cameras; I took photos of everything and often made my siblings pose for me in flower beds and with sheets draped across doors as backdrops. As a teenager, I was more into my painting and art so I didn’t really give photography much thought until, as an adult, I started taking photos of my sister’s first pregnancy and baby. Tell us a bit about discovering your love for food… My childhood growing up on the islands was all about being outdoors, picking fruit off the trees and walking on the reef.
