The knock-on effect of improvements in new cars is a growing source of parts for affordable EV conversions, and it’s not just about going green. There’s a growing community of enthusiasts reverse-engineering electric powertrain to push the performance envelope a little further, and New Electric has begun offering conversion courses at its workshop in Ireland. As company founder, Kevin Sharpe, explains, the aim is to share knowledge and reduce costs. One of the friendliest VAG-based race series is moving over to the track attack race club, Classic VW Cup has gone through a series of changes over the winter including the move to open up the classes somewhat to attract a greater range of competitors. This includes the introduction of a GT class for big power VAG models, which couldn’t previously race within the regs. German tuner Streetec has a reputation for getting stuck into new cars pretty quickly – their Mk8 Golf (PVW 08/20) was on air within days of most customers being able to place orders.
