It says a lot about the legacy of the Mk1 Golf GTI that, almost 50 years after its launch, its formula of usable everyday performance is still the yardstick against which every Volkswagen hot hatch is measured. From magazines to marketing material, you’re never far from a nod to the first of the breed when a new generation reaches the road, but Wolfsburg’s engineers arguably never recaptured the Mk1 spirit as effectively as they did with the Lupo GTI. The fast Golf concept had become complex when the Mk4 arrived in 1997. Which of us turbo owners out there doesn’t fancy a car with a little more boost and a lot more power? Glancing across the imaginary room with you all in it I’m guessing there are a lot of hands up right now. The conundrum with the forced induction tuning process is, that once you start squeezing that air/fuel mixture to make it denser, you also make it hotter, which then makes it expand, and that, in turn, makes it less dense. It’s been an issue since the turbocharged car was invented, of course, which led engineers to create the intercooler; basically a radiator to relieve heat from the charge before it’s inducted to the engine, increasing its density, and literally giving you more bang for your buck. Africa’s largest VW gathering, Vdub Camp Fest, takes place annually in South Africa’s Limpopo province at a holiday resort known as Warmbaths. Afteratwo-year, pandemic-forced break, the South African Volkswagen communities were a little more than eager to finally be allowed to attend shows again and take in the awesomeness of loads of new builds. Having previously built two modified Atlas models in conjunction with Volkswagen you could be forgiven for thinking PVW contributor, Jamie Orr had well and truly scratched that rather large SUV-shaped itch he had, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. After finally getting the car up to scratch I’ve actually been enjoying it with the start of the car show season. I’ve been to a few local meets which have been nice to attend and with some amazing weather the car’s been getting plenty of TLC in the detailing department. A good friend of mine, Neil McRae, has set up NM Car Detailing Products and asked me to photograph some of the range, so I figured the best time to do this was of course when the car needed a spruce up. I must say that I just love the 17" Tornado alloys, they always look fresh and are understandably a complete joy to clean as well.
