In my mind, the Mk6 Golf never really got the love or kudos it should have received first time around, especially in GTI and R form. It was a brilliant car. The Mk5 clearly went down a storm, largely because VW finally got its mojo back after a bad run with the Mk3 and fourth-gen Golf. The Mk7 was also a cracking car that was an instant success, offering huge tuning scope, but it was also a great ride out of the box. Effectively, the Mk6 was just a slightly better, more polished version of the Mk5 but people sort of over looked that. Thomas Godfrey is a 25-year old panel beater although, with the level of craftsmanship displayed on his Golf, you’d think he was a far more experienced hand. Despite the scorching hot sun and competition from other local events, Cult Classic’s Sweet 16 suffered little in the form of reduced attendance. In fact, fantastic cars not withstanding, the most remarkable thing about it is that nothing remarkable happens. Josh and his sturdy team of volunteers have gotten it down to such a science, rumour has it Jeff Bezos tapped their talents for drone programming. The event, one of this author’s favourite, is as cool as a cucumber and twice as refreshing. People show up in a variety of rides, mostly Volkswagens but that isn’t a requirement, park up, and enjoy.
