So you’ve decided that you want to start shooting weddings, but how do you even start? Well, the first step would be to simply get the word out there. These days social media is massive, so utilising this can really pay dividends – and what’s more, it’s completely free. In essence there are three core styles of wedding photography. First, there’s photojournalism – this is about capturing things as they happen, with very little interference or posing. On the other end of the spectrum is fashion-style photography. This involves intricate posing, and often multiple off-camera flashes for dramatic effects. Finally, there’s the traditional method, which requires people to look and smile at the camera, while a flashgun may be used to ensure that everything is uniformly lit and sharp. When the lights go down and the music starts blaring, you know the party has begun, which is a perfect opportunity for you to capture some fantastic action shots of people pulling their best shapes on the dance floor. Even with the DJ’s disco lights projecting shapes and colours around the room, however, there won’t be very much light available for your camera, so unless you want to risk blurry or noisy shots, a flashgun is your best bet for capturing the action. The Alpha 6400 has inherited the autofocus DNA of the full-frame A9, A7R III and A7 III models, boasting 425 phase-detection and 425 contrast AF points, plus what Sony claims to be the world’s fastest AF acquisition time of 0.02 sec. This autofocus system covers approximately 84% of the image area, and is sensitive down to -2EV. It boasts Sony’s acclaimed Eye AF system in single-shot and continuous shooting modes; Eye AF support for animals is due shortly. Chinese lens and adapter manufacturer Kipon has unveiled a new super-wide-angle optic designed for APS-C format bodies, the Ibegon 12mm f/2.8. So far the lens is only confirmed to be available for Fujifilm’s X mount, with the lens offering an effective focal length of 18mm when used with compatible Fujifilm bodies like the Fujifilm X-T30 and X-T3, and its wide maximum aperture should give it enough appeal for handheld applications, such as street and documentary photography. The lens has been designed with 12 elements spread across nine groups, and has seven blades on the inside to form the diaphragm. The first dance is the last big milestone for most couples on their wedding day. It’s the last big moment they will share together before cutting loose and dancing the night away with their family and friends. As most dancefloors are plunged into darkness, you may have to find your own means of generating light, and that typically means using a flashgun. 1 HOUR A camera’s shutter mechanism sits in front of the image sensor and is made up of two ‘curtains’. Before you take a shot, one curtain is closed, blocking the sensor, while the other is open, and raised above the sensor. As you press the shutter release button the first curtain (covering the sensor) opens, exposing the sensor to light, and at the end of the exposure the second curtain closes, blocking the sensor again. So when we talk about the length of an exposure, or shutter speed, we’re referring to the time between the camera’s shutter opening and closing; if we talk about a ‘one-second exposure’, the front curtain opens, and a second later, the rear curtain closes to cover it. 1 GATHER YOUR EQUIPMENT You’ll need a few bits of kit for this technique. First, you’ll need a flashgun, and a means of firing it remotely via a set of wireless triggers. You’ll also need a light stand on which to mount your flash. 2 CAMERA SETTINGS Switch your camera to Manual mode (M on the mode dial), and set the shutter speed to 1/125 sec and the aperture to f/11. Award-winning photographer and film-maker Beno Saradzic was lucky enough to be one of the first photographers to get his hands on Fujifilm’s new GFX100 102MP medium format camera – and he didn’t waste the opportunity, using it to create this breathtaking three-minute high-res timelapse of Dubai at night. Saradzic is a Fujifilm ambassador, and as such he was invited to test one of the first prototypes of the camera. “I was dying to see what a 12K sensor could produce.
