The UK’s Royal Observatory Greenwich has announced the shortlisted images for the 2019 Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition. This year’s contest attracted more than 4,600 entries from astrophotographers in 90 countries around the world, setting a new record for the contest, which is now in its eleventh year.
The shortlisted images include stunning starscapes from locations around the globe, as well as images from across our Solar System, galaxy and the wider universe, from a planetary Helix Nebula located 650 light years away, to the second largest planet in our solar system, Saturn.
