1 LOCATION Find a location where the sun creates a nice backlight; this image was shot at around 5.30pm on a sunny day, when the sun is softening and lower in the sky, creating a nice hair light. Place the model facing away from the sun. 2 SET EXPOSURE Create an exposure that leaves the background slightly overexposed but not completely whited out. The light on the hair is important; it should be exposed nicely. Here I’m using shutter speed and aperture to control the amount of light, with the aperture set at f/4.5 to create a soft portrait. 3 PLACE THE FLASH Position the flash in front of but to the side of the model – in this image some of the natural light is bouncing off the white…

1 HOUR To photograph in a minimalist way, we must first learn what it means to be minimalistic. Minimalism is defined in the Oxford Dictionary of English as: “A movement in sculpture and painting, which arose in the 1950s, characterized by the use of simple, massive forms.” Although we’re not sculpting or painting anything, we can extrapolate the conceptual values of this definition and apply them to our photography. For this shoot, we’re abiding by the rule ‘less is more’, so that means taking everything that isn’t essential out of the frame. We have the option of either physically removing it, or repositioning ourselves to frame out anything distracting. Sony has announced the latest update to its popular RX100 compact line, the RX100 Mark VII. The new camera conforms to much the same design as the RX100 VI, including the same lens, which offers a 24-200mm zoom range in 35mm terms and a maximum aperture of f/2.8-4.5. Also on board is a newly developed 20.1MP 1-inch stacked CMOS sensor, as well a BIONZ X processing engine and five-axis image stabilization. It arrives with the familiar headline claim of having the world’s fastest autofocus among cameras with a 1-inch sensor, which sounds impressive but means very little in practice, although Sony has squeezed in some of the autofocus wizardry seen in its interchangeable lens cameras in recent months. It’s often assumed that a bright sunny day is great for photography – I can’t count the number of clients I have that get over-excited when they see blue skies. But as seasoned portrait photographers know, depending on how and when we use the sun, natural light can be a portrait photographer’s biggest gift or worst nightmare. Sunlight comes in several forms – from hard to soft, and from bright to diffused, and learning when and how to use different kinds of light comes with experience and experimentation. Natural light can be used alone, or combined with flash to create a wide variety of subtle or striking effects that completely change the look of a scene or a portrait. Hard light is often found in the summer, where cloud or haze is minimal and the sun is high in the sky. Shooting abroad, this light is more common, and although not ideal during midday, the later afternoon hours create predictable and softer hard light. Hard light becomes more flattering the lower the sun is in the sky, so shooting in the morning or afternoon is recommended. Where possible, I avoid overhead, bare sun from 11am through to 2pm or 3pm depending on the time of year. Using hard light to create portraits is a totally different beast to using soft/diffused light. Hard light is much brighter, and creates much harder shadows. Nikon has confirmed the arrival of its NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.8 S, the longest prime lens for the Z mount so far. Nikon claims the optic delivers exceptional sharpness to the corners of the frame at even its widest f/1.8 aperture, thanks to a fresh optical design that sees 12 elements arranged over eight groups, with two extra-low dispersion elements to combat chromatic aberration and Nano Crystal Coat to help banish flare and ghosting. Also helping to control flare and ghosting is a round hood that ships with the lens as standard, while nine-diaphragm blades inside the lens should ensure that bokeh is nice and smooth. Okay, so let’s be honest: if you’re based in England, cloud-free days with blazing sun are rare. A far cry from the predictability of a Californian summer, English summer days can be drab and wet, or scorched by a heat wave. Winters are no less predictable; cloud-free sunny skies give way to overcast and grey – and that can all be in one day! Shooting portraits outside in these conditions makes life a little harder, the unpredictability of the weather means as photographers we rarely know what’s going to happen from one week to the next, let alone over the course of a few hours’ shooting. The US National Audubon Society is dedicated to protecting birds and their habitats throughout the Americas, and the society, named after the US naturalist and artist John James Audubon, has announced the winners of its tenth annual bird photography contest. This year’s competition attracted 2,253 entries from photographers across the US and Canada, and in addition to the usual grand prize, professional prize, amateur prize and youth prize, saw the introduction of two new prizes: the Plants for Birds Prize and the Fisher Prize, awarded to the image showing the most creative approach to bird photography across all categories. Most of us like to travel light, and so a cumbersome tripod is likely to be left at home, where it’s no use whatsoever. However, while travel tripods are made to be compact and light, they have a reputation for being flimsy, relatively unstable and too small to enable a comfortable operating height. The new breed of travel tripods aims to give you the best of both worlds. Most have legs that swing upwards for stowage, so that the head is encircled by the feet; this reduces the folded height by around 8cm to 10cm. Some models also include as many as five sections in each leg and a two-section extending centre column, reducing the folded height even more, while still enabling a useful maximum operating height.
