PRO NATASHA J BELLA A successful model, Natasha learnt the tricks of the trade of lighting while posing for photographers. She found herself passing on suggestions to hobbyist photographers who had booked her, and she now offers one-to-one tuition and group workshops in her own studio. Natasha says… My purpose-built studio is like a mini film set, and comes with a large selection of ready-made props that can be easily moved into position, such as a bed, chaise longue, dressing table and acrylic cube, while the different walls have different wall coverings, so I can mix and match them for a multitude of different looks. I also have a ceiling-mounted paper-roll holder with a selection of different-coloured backdrops that can be pulled down, and lots of soft materials I can drape behind the sets for an intimate look. But jetting off to Africa, Asia or South America to go on safari isn’t cheap, and there’s no guarantee that you’ll track down these fierce but fascinating felines if you do. Wildlife parks, on the other hand, offer guaranteed access to these amazing animals, but the drawback is that there’s a physical barrier between you and them – no bad thing, considering these are predators that would treat a photographer as a tasty snack, but by following our tips, you can take brilliant natural-looking images that look like they could have been shot in the wild. Canon has finally announced the highly anticipated and much-leaked EOS 90D DSLR, alongside the EOS M6 Mk II mirrorless camera and two new RF series lenses, the RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM and RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM. The 90D joins Canon’s enthusiast-level DSLR stable, replacing the 80D that arrived back in 2016. A number of the 80D’s features have been either boosted, or tweaked at the very least, the sensor among them. In place of the 80D’s APS-C 24.2MP sensor, the EOS 90D gets a fresh 32.5MP sensor that can record both 4K and Full HD video. The new camera is driven by the DIGIC 8 processing engine seen in several recent models, and this enables it to fire bursts of images at 11fps in live view, or 10fps…

EXPOSURE SETTINGS Natasha says… In manual mode, I suggest base settings of ISO100 for best quality, 1/125 sec and f/8, which will not only give a good depth of field, but is also where most lenses are at their sharpest. We can then either adjust the power of the lights, or the aperture, to get the exposure we want. WHITE BALANCE Natasha says… Although shooting raw means we can change the white balance later, aim to get the image as perfect as possible in-camera. Alessandro had understandably set Flash white balance, but this gives quite a cold, clinical look. I prefer to use the Direct Sunlight mode, which gives a warmer feel to shots. Of all the tonal adjustment tools available to you in Photoshop, Curves is without doubt the most powerful – it can do the jobs of most of the other tone-tweaking tools, plus some things they can’t do: it can lighten, darken, alter colours, boost contrast, correct color casts and more – Curves might just be the ultimate image-editing tool. Unfortunately for some, there’s another curve that gets in the way: the steep learning curve. Curves can be difficult to grasp for the uninitiated. 1 CROP AND STRAIGHTEN Natasha says… Shoot wide, not only so the model has room to flow from one pose to the next, but so you have more options in choosing the final crop. A symmetrical pose would look ideal centred, whereas something else might need more negative space to one side. 2 SKIN RETOUCHING Natasha says… Blemish removal and skin smoothing is an essential part of processing creative portraits and beauty shots. Frequency Separation is a popular method that creates flawless skin and still maintains a natural texture. BELLA This image is a favourite in my portfolio. Using props such as this snood adds to the photo shoots. Stuart shot this image at my workshop and won a trophy for first place in the Portrait Photography competition at Halton Photographic Society. FLY FREE LITTLE BIRD Eileen attended my workshop twice, and used this image in a composite, which she does so well using Photoshop. Nikon has shared a captivating video by wildlife photographer and brand ambassador Kristi Odom to show off the slow-motion capabilities of its Z 6 and Z 7 full-frame mirrorless cameras. In a blog post accompanying the short film, Odom says the cameras have given her a new way to capture wildlife, encouraging her to become a “nature cinematographer” as well as a stills photographer, and enabling her to capture “clips of the moments when I feel connected to nature”. She adds: “I’ve seen things I can’t pick up with my own eye – like the pattern a bee makes with her wings while in flight, or the look in a lioness’ eye when she turns and looks at me.” Odom used two lenses to shoot the video, an AF-S NIKKOR…

www.canon.co.uk £2,799/$2,699 The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM combines a fast f/1.2 maximum aperture for soft background blur with the 85mm focal length reckoned to give the best balance between flattering facial perspectives and a useful working distance for portraiture. An important addition to the Canon RF lens roadmap, it’s likely to be categorised solidly as a ‘portrait’ lens by most photographers, although Canon says it’s also suited to street and low-light photography. That f/1.2 lens aperture is quite something. It’s roughly half a stop faster than the f/1.4 maximum aperture commonly seen in portrait lenses.
