Jordan says… I try to get everything as right as possible in-camera, but my shots still need processing to get the very best out of them. Using Adobe Lightroom means that I can easily process shots together for a consistent look between them, while shooting in raw means that I can fine-tune the exposure to carefully balance the lighter and darker areas of the scene. I’ll use radial selections to emphasise areas I want to direct the viewer’s attention to; straightening to ensure that verticals and horizons are absolutely bang-on; and a little subtle cloning – I have no qualms about removing distractions that would otherwise spoil a perfectly sellable shot!…

1 HOUR We joined Nikon School UK for low-light portraiture masterclass. The first thing we learned was about light, and specifically its four key attributes: quality, quantity, direction and colour. The workshop kicked off in Nikon School’s studio in the Centre of Excellence, where there were several different light sources in the room to contend with – overhead spotlights, fluorescent lights and daylight coming through the windows – giving a mix of colour temperatures. The most flattering light for our portrait subject is soft light, and that means we need to diffuse the light to allow a wider spread. We used the Lastolite Ezybox Pro Strip softbox for this, which has a pair of white baffles inside to soften the light. How much flash light we need depends on our…

Sony has announced two new models in its APS-C mirrorless Alpha line, the A6600 and A6100. As their names suggest, the two appear to sit on either side of the A6400 that was announced at the start of the year, with the A6600 taking the honor of the flagship model in the line. Both new models have much in common with the A6400, including a 24.2MP APS-C sensor and A9-level BIONZ X processing. They also both have a top burst shooting speed of 11fps, with autofocus and auto-exposure working throughout. The pair also match the A6400 in sporting a 3-inch tilting LCD touchscreen. Jordan says… Live view is really useful for cityscape photography. While it can be difficult to see the display in bright daylight, in the darker conditions that cities are typically shot in, it’s easy to read. The level display confirms that your horizons are straight, and the touch focus control enables you to select exactly where you want your focus to be. Best of all, pressing the OK button toggles the exposure preview on and off, which simulates the effect of the exposure settings you’ve chosen before you take the shot.…

1 SPIRIT LEVEL Jordan says… I can’t abide off-kilter horizons, and while you can straighten this in post, you lose pixels. I don’t bother with the spirit levels on the tripod itself; I use a bubble level that slots into my camera’s hotshoe, and this ensures that my horizons are perfectly straight at a glance. It’s an old-school way of doing things, but it hasn’t failed me since the film days. 2 ND FILTERS & GRADS Jordan says… I use ND and ND grad filters for pretty much every shot I take. My preferred ND is the six-stop Lee Little Stopper, which I find is enough to calm moving water and clouds without overdoing the effect and making exposures ridiculously long. FUSHIMI INARI TAISHA I had been at Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari Shrine since before first light. Shortly after sunrise I spotted this woman in the most stunning attire. She didn’t speak any English but understood me enough and kindly agreed to pose for a few shots. Shot on a Nikon D850 with 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. An enchanting image of a pelican appearing to dance on a frozen lake has won the photographer who captured it the coveted title of Bird Photographer of the Year 2019. Caron Steele shot the image of a dalmatian pelican, entitled Dancing on Ice (above, top-left) on Lake Kerkini in Greece. The birds had left the lake when it froze for the first time in 16 years, but Steele was able to get her shot when the lake began to thaw and the birds started to return, slipping on the ice as they tried to take off and land. “It was a truly unique experience, both magical and comical at the same time,” she says.
