When you’ve taken an image that you’re really happy with it can be tempting to upload it to the internet straight away, or print it out, and consider that job done. But pressing the shutter button and taking the photo is only half the story. An image hasn’t been taken that couldn’t benefit from a little enhancement, whether that’s a crop to improve the framing, a subtle boost to the colours, or a black and white treatment, and you’ll often find that when you start working on images in editing software you’ll see potential in them that you hadn’t noticed before – especially if you shoot raw files Raw files are images that contain significantly more brightness and colour information than JPEGs, which are compressed in-camera. Once you’ve imported your shots and done everything you want to do with your photos in the Library module, such as adding keywords and creating any collections you want to make, it’s time to go into the Develop module to start editing images to bring them to life. Click on the Develop module heading at the top-right, or press D on your keyboard, to get there. This is where you can take advantage of the extra image information that’s contained in your raw files to adjust exposure by over 10 stops, although realistically it’s best not to push your edits past two or three stops under or over the capture exposure to maintain a usable image quality. If you love rollercoasters – or if you just like the idea of rollercoasters, but can’t bring yourself to get on one and would rather enjoy the experience from the comfort of your armchair – you’ll enjoy this dizzying FPV movie from drone pilot and YouTuber Viggo Koch. Koch teamed up with the Liseberg amusement park in Gothenburg, Sweden to chase the park’s HELIX rollercoaster for every twist and turn of its 75-second run, using his custom racing drone fitted with a GoPro HERO 6 Black action cam. Not surprisingly the resulting footage is pretty spectacular, and almost as stomach-churning as the real thing. After promising for months that it was bringing a full version of Photoshop to Apple’s iPad, Adobe has finally unveiled its Photoshop on iPad App. The app uses the same code base as Photoshop for desktop; Adobe says its goal was to reimagine the “power, depth, and flexibility” of the desktop app for use on a tablet. The app is available now as a free download, and you’ll have unrestricted access to the app for 30 days – beyond that you’ll need to have a subscription to one of Adobe’s Creative Cloud plans. You can currently get the Creative Cloud photography plan for £9.98 /$9.99, which includes Photoshop and Lightroom across all your (compatible) devices, including computers and iPads. You can navigate your way around the Lightroom Classic CC interface using the module buttons in the top-right corner. If you’re loading Lightroom up for the first time you’ll be given the option to take a quick guided tour of the interface. It’s also worth checking that you have the latest version of Lightroom Classic CC by going to Help > Updates, as an older version might not be able to read your raw files if your camera is relatively new. It’s unlikely that you’ll need to make use of any modules other than the first two – the Library and Develop modules – when you’re doing everyday image editing, so we’ll start in Lightroom’s Library module, which is where you import your raw files into the application. With your basic raw conversion completed it’s time to move on and take more control of the image to get it looking exactly how you want it. To do this we’ll be using the powerful tools on offer in Lightoom’s Develop module. The main six tools – Crop, Spot Removal, Red Eye, Graduated Filter, Radial Filter and Adjustment Brush – can all be found under the histogram, while others, like the White Balance and Targeted Adjustment tools, can be found within certain panels on the right-hand side. 2 HOURS Wide-angle lenses enable you to cram much more into your scene, with an angle of view that sucks more than the eye can see into the frame. The widest angles available in non-fisheye lenses used to be around 16mm for full-frame cameras, but recently we’ve seen lenses that stretch to 14mm, like Nikon’s 14-24mm f/2.8. A few more millimetres of focal length may not sound like much, but the effect on viewing angle at this end of the zoom range is a big deal, at 114 degrees as opposed to 107 degrees with a 16mm lens. Ultra-wide lenses come with a caveat: capturing the light at such extreme viewing angles necessitates the inclusion of bulbous front elements that make using regular filters impossible. This is also the stage at which you can organise your shots, build bespoke collections of groups of images, and also simplify trivial tasks like renaming a batch of images. One question every photographer will ask themselves during the editing process is “When should I take my image from Lightroom into Photoshop?” At this point you should make sure that you understand and utilise the strengths of each program. Lightroom Classic CC is a fantastic raw converter and image library, while Photoshop CC is a powerful image manipulation tool that’s brilliant for creating composites and doing involved edits that are impossible in Lightroom.
