Although music shots are spontaneous, you’ll still need to do some research. Have a look online at the shots other photographers have been getting on the same tour (bear in mind they will only post their best shots). Check out YouTube videos, too, as you can usually find out what the lighting will be like, the best position to be in the pit, and where the band members will be on stage. Are there any spectacular jump shots to be had? Knowing the band helps here. For example, Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden usually starts his set with an almighty leap, so I’m always prepared in advance for this. I use Lightroom for basic editing, and Photoshop for anything else. I import my raw files, and once retouched, export them as high-res JPEGs. I think cropping is very useful, as most images can be improved with an effective crop. I prefer to maintain the integrity and proportion of the original crop, and I’m not a fan of a square or two-thirds crop. I’ll normally adjust the levels and contrast and sharpen the image. The Clarity and Dehaze tools are useful, but need to be used in moderation. The overuse of HDR and oversaturated images is a complete turn-off for me. Lightroom is also excellent for bringing life back to magenta- and blue-saturated images with the Colour Balance tool. I do convert a lot of images to black and white,…

Kristina Makeeva is a creative travel and fashion photographer who “dreams with her eyes open”. Makeeva travels to spectacular locations around the world, and uses models, costumes and props to create images that tell stories and bring the locations to life. SmugMug has created a short film that showcases Makeeva’s work, and follows her during a shoot at the frozen Lake Baikal in southern Siberia, where she used striking coloured outfits, balloons, and the obligatory husky to create captivating images, including the main shot above, amid the winter-wonderland icescape. One of the most fun things you can do with Photoshop is blend several photos to create an entirely new image. This can lead to all kinds of weird and wonderful results – but it’s not all about making double exposures, blending a crocodile with a kitten, or sending your grandmother to the moon! Sometimes it can be just as eyecatching to craft a subtle composite from slightly altered versions of the same scene, and in this video tutorial we’ll show you how to do just that, to create the precarious looking portrait above. “Three songs, no flash!” Anyone shooting music will have heard this mantra hundreds of times, as it tends to be the industry standard around the world. What it essentially means is that you have approximately 10-15 minutes in the pit to capture images, with the constraints of whatever lighting is available. What the lighting engineer thinks is an exciting light show for the audience is almost invariably terrible to shoot in. Magenta, blue, red, strobes, backlighting, or even no light at all can make it impossibly difficult to do the band justice. Add to that an over-excitable smoke machine operator and your options for creative, visually exciting images can be severely limited. 1 HOUR When wet dogs start shaking their coats dry people usually dive for cover, but it’s a fun moment that’s filled with both action and character, and in this project we’ll look at how you can capture that moment. We’ll explain how to light a sodden subject, and how to set up your camera to freeze the action in crystal-clear clarity. We’ve used Rotolight LED panels to light our subject (you could also use a couple of flashguns), which have a high-speed sync flash mode that helps to freeze motion. However, as is the case with any LEDs, the maximum output of our panels doesn’t come close to that of even the most basic flashgun, so we have to adapt out exposure accordingly with a higher ISO.
