“Wide apertures such as f/2.8 can throw everything but the subject out of focus for a striking look” Macro isn’t a niche genre, but it M is a specialist one, and the kit required in order to capture successful images certainly reflects that. In terms of cameras, the image quality and large viewfinder offered by DSLRs means they’re still the go-to choice for taking close-ups. The sensor size differs between cameras, however, affecting how magnified or ‘cropped’ your final images will appear (see the next page for more on this). As macro is such a precise pursuit, it’s best to take your camera out of Auto mode and instead control the settings in Manual, or with the semi-auto modes of Aperture or Shutter Priority. Some macro subjects are best S captured, or can only be captured, in the great outdoors – think fungi, insects, amphibians and plants – especially if you want them displayed against a stunning natural environment. While shooting outside is enjoyable, it’s very different to being in a home studio setup, and you’ll have much less control over the environment and lighting conditions. Any outdoor photography means being at the mercy of the weather, so check the forecast for several days leading up to a shoot. Strong winds are a no-go where butterfly and dragonfly hunting is concerned, and you’ll also find it harder to freeze plant life without relying on faster shutter speeds. 1 HOUR One of the big advantages of DSLRs and mirrorless cameras is that they use interchangable lens systems, so you can attach a lens to suit the demands of the subject you’re shooting: a wide-angle optic for landscapes, macro for extreme close-ups, or a super-telephoto lens to turn distant wildlife into frame-filling shots. There is one drawback though: every time you swap a lens there’s a chance that dust might find its way onto your camera’s sensor. This can then show up in your images as dark spots, also called ‘sensor spots’, and it’s a sign that your camera and optics need a clean. Olympus has confirmed that its new entry-level mirrorless camera, the PEN E-PL10, is now available to buy in the UK and Europe. The E-PL10 is a beginner-friendly Micro Four Thirds camera with the same core features as the PEN E-PL9, which means it has a 16MP sensor, 8.6fps burst shooting and the ability to shoot 4K video at 30fps; in fact the new camera is only a modest upgrade over its predecessor. As before, the camera offers 3.5 stops of in-body image stabilisation, which is helpful for both shooting video and preserving image quality in lower light. Fine-tuning for filters So what’s new? A macro lens really is essential A for getting the most out of this genre, as it will enable you to focus on subjects far closer to the camera than would be possible with any conventional optic. A true macro lens is capable of a reproduction ratio of 1:1 (at its closest focusing distance), where subjects are recorded on the image sensor at life size. There are specialist lenses that get even closer than this, such as the Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8, which can capture subjects at up to 5x life size. Photography in all its genres can be used to showcase familiar subjects in a new light. Macro reveals intricate and previously unseen details, as tiny worlds that are often too small to be seen with the naked eye get thrown into clear view for us to marvel at. Light is the key element of any L photograph, but with macro photography it’s often a limiting factor. This is because the genre often requires a narrow aperture to be used, which helps to obtain a sufficient depth of field and get everything in focus, but limits the amount of light entering the lens. Having a lens very close to a subject can also block out light, and cast shadows across it. When shooting inside you’re likely to need additional light sources, such as macro flash units or continuous lamps. On-camera flash tends to produce poor results because the direction of light can’t be controlled, but a specialist macro flash unit, such as a ring or twin light, can be used to illuminate nearby subjects from all sides. A stunning black and white image of leaping rabbits has won top prize in the 2019 Nature Photographer of the Year awards. Hungarian photographer Csaba Daróczi shot the image, which shows two white rabbits from a colony in Kiskunsag, Hungary, fighting over food. The judges chose the image for its “atmosphere, timing, beautiful light, perfect sharpness and composition”. Jury chair Keith Wilson added: “This photo is proof of the fact that you don’t have to get an extremely rare or extraordinary species in front of your camera to be able to create a great nature photo. For a home studio setup, or if you’re shooting indoors on location, there’s no beating the power and versatility of a conventional mains-powered flash kit. Prime options include the likes of the Elinchrom D-Lite and Interfit Honey Badger twin-head kits, which are easy to carry around, yet quick and easy to set up, and simple to use. The only real problem is if you want the versatility of being able to shoot outdoors, using a flash head to supplement natural daylight.
