For all the exciting new kit and F technological innovations that were ushered in, it’s difficult to look at 2019 without feeling a pit in the stomach. The year started with a stark prognostication, as Canon CEO Fujio Mitarai warned in January that the camera market would contract for two years and would ultimately shrink by as much as 50%, mainly due to smartphone use. Things appeared even bleaker in February, with the annual report by LensVid noting that the market has collapsed by 84% since 2010. The lifeline identified by most manufacturers was to pare down production of lower-end products – those most likely to be made redundant by camera phones – and focus on the higher-spec bodies favoured by professionals and business users. As a professional sports photographer I have covered all the major events, from the last 15 Summer and Winter Olympics to elephant polo and horse racing on ice. I currently shoot with two Sony A9 Mk II bodies, each fitted with vertical grips and paired with a full range of Sony prime and zoom lenses, from 12mm to 600mm. I also use 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. My favourite lenses include my 135mm f/1.8, which is supersharp and allows me to reduce depth of field to a sliver. The 600mm f/4 is the ultimate long lens, and works amazingly well with both the converters. The best way to describe my work, no matter what I am shooting, is storytelling. I am always considering and basing my creative choices on the idea that I am trying to tell my viewer – or my client’s viewer – a story. I haven’t always been an Olympus user, but my previous Canon gear was beginning to make it hard for me to do the kind of shooting I like to do. I was also starting to get very serious neck problems from having two massively heavy cameras and lenses on my shoulder for hours at a stretch. This one may take another year or so to come to fruition, but the winds of change will start being felt in 2020. Echoing its switch to CFexpress, Canon announced that it will graduate to HEIF files (which can record double the amount of information as a JPEG in the same file size) in the 1D X Mk III. While the new flagship will still offer JPEG as an option, this seems a watershed moment, akin to Apple abandoning JPEGs in favour of HEIFs in 2017. The option to record more images in less space (or better images in the same space) will render JPEGs redundant – and it’s only a matter of time before the rest of Canon’s product line, and the rest of the industry, follows.…

The original CamRanger remote was a compact box of tricks that connected via USB to Canon and Nikon DSLRs; its Wi-Fi signal then let you wirelessly connect an Android or Apple smart device, or a Mac or PC, to use as a remote camera control or for wireless tethering. The CamRanger 2 picks up where the original left off, and features the same broad device compatibility. But where the original could only connect to Canon and Nikon DSLRs, CamRanger 2 adds support for Fujifilm and Sony cameras. 802.11n 2.4GHz Wi-Fi enables up to 300Mbps image transfer speeds, but the CamRanger 2 also packs dual-band Wi-Fi, with the secondary 5GHz 802.11ac output capable of a maximum 433Mbps. Having gained a reputation as the ‘go to’ action photographer (with a penchant for big lighting jobs) for many publishers, I have worked for Sports Illustrated, Fortune, LIFE, Stern, GEO, National Geographic and all the UK press. Most of my early photographic career was spent abroad in exotic locations, shooting primates in Malaysia, bears in Alaska and whales off of Vancouver Island. Now my work focuses on projects closer to home in London. My formative years in photography consisted largely of shooting film on 35mm and 120 rangefinder cameras. I loved the fact that these were relatively small, precise instruments that caused minimum distraction between me and my subjects. I was never happy using digital SLRs, which seemed large and bulky. When Fujifilm brought out the X-Pro1 in 2012 it looked like finally someone had built a digital camera like a film rangefinder body – small, with lots of manual controls and dials. I bought it the week it came out, and I have happily used Fujifilm ever since. A curious thing has happened in the last couple of years: stills cameras have not only become de facto video cameras, they’ve actually become some of the best video cameras. Photographers who previously had no interest in cinematography now find themselves able to film 4K videos, YouTube vlogs and website content – and weekend wedding shooters are suddenly able to offer Ultra HD footage to their clients. Panasonic and Blackmagic are leading the way, with 6K for dedicated video cameras, but with more stills cameras promising internal 10-bit recording, this is going to be a major factor in buying decisions.…

Leading UK camera retailer Wex Photo Video has announced the winner of its Twitter-based #WexMondays Photographer of the Year competition. Entrants submit an image every Monday using the #WexMondays hashtag, and each week winning and runner-up images are chosen by the judging panel, and the photographers are allocated points on a leader board; at the end of the year, the three photographers who’ve racked up the most points are awarded first, second and third place prizes. The camera industry can be, in our current times, both exciting and uncertain. One minute, manufacturers are praising mirrorless systems as the future of photography, and the next they’re launching new flagship DSLRs. To cut through some of the confusion, we’ve started this feature by bringing you a roundup of 2019’s important camera milestones, launches and trends. Photography has been my passion since I first saw images of my family as a child, and it was my dream to become a photographer. Portrait photography is my speciality, and, being in love with paintings, I want to shoot fashion and wedding images with a painterly style. For a wedding I shoot with three bodies: a Canon EOS 5D Mk IV, EOS-1D X Mk II and EOS R. Why three bodies? It’s because I prefer fixed focal length lenses, and I don’t want to change when I work. I have a 50mm f/1.2, 35mm f/1.4 II, and my favourite, the 85mm f/1.2. With the Canon EOS R I also use the RF 28/70 f/2, because it’s very bright. I’m lost without my 85mm. 1 HIGH ISO PERFORMANCE I love to shoot in low light, so achieving the shutter speeds I need to capture action is challenging. The S1 gives me at least an extra hour of shooting at dawn/dusk, and I’ve been amazed at the smooth quality of the results, even at ISO6400. 2 FOCUS TRACKING This is incredibly accurate, especially with subjects running towards the lens. Once locked on (and coupled with the 10fps) I’m confident I’ll have plenty of sharp frames. 3 VIEWFINDER Being able to review images in the viewfinder is also a feature I’ve enjoyed using, and saves those vital seconds when needing to adjust while photographing action.…

1 HANDLING I love the overall feel and usability of both systems: small cameras and lenses that are really well built, with lots of manual controls. 2 TONING I’m a fan of the Fujifilm colours and film simulations, especially Classic Chrome: really nice film-like colours that provide a great base for my editing. 3 VERSATILITY The overall maturity of the system gives me so many camera/lens options, so I can match the right gear to the job. 4 FIRMWARE I admire Fujifilm’s customer support. Frizzy hair can be a real challenge to retouch, especially if stray hairs sprout out from the edges of the subject’s head. The tips in this video tutorial will help you fix the frizz, but it’s still best to get things looking as neat as you can at the time of shooting – a quick spray with a de-frizzing product could save you a lot of retouching, while you should avoid strong backlighting or strongly contrasting backdrops, both of which will emphasise hair edges.
