When I photograph wildlife I W strive to create eye-catching images that cannot be instantly replicated. I do this by looking for emotion in a subject’s face, adding energy by patiently waiting for interesting behaviour, and capturing dramatic light by getting up at 4am. I want people to look at my images and enjoy them for both their aesthetic quality and the effort that has gone into creating them. While there’s an obvious draw to the colourful and cuter members of the animal kingdom, I love the challenge of capturing striking images of less exotic animals too. When it comes to photographing wildlife, it’s important to recognise that luck will always play a pivotal role in your success. Despite this, it’s possible to sway the odds in your favour by dedicating as much time as possible towards your chosen project, whether you decide to focus on a specific species, location or genre. Often the most strenuous work is put in before a single image is taken. The best photography competitions combine stunning imagery with an educational mission, and none more so than the Royal Society Publishing Photography Competition, which “celebrates the power of photography in capturing scientific phenomena happening all around us, and the role great images play in making science accessible to a wide audience”. 1 HOUR Most photographic blur effects occur when the subject moves during the exposure – think of blurred water or clouds, a fast-moving subject or a speeding car. Of course, for these kinds of effects a perfectly stationary camera is essential – but what about if we flip things around so that the subject remains still and the camera moves instead? With the right setup, we can create streaks of blur across our image. For this technique we quickly move the camera during a long exposure of around a third of a second to blur parts of the subject. But that’s the simple part. The slightly more complicated aspect is the lighting. The aim here is to light our subject partially with flash, and partially with continuous lighting. This way,…

If you thought DSLRs were about as relevant as candybar phones, the new Nikon D780 is here to try and change your mind – it’s a full-frame DSLR that also packs in some of the latest and smartest mirrorless camera tech. The successor to the five-year-old D750, it’s designed to be the fullframe equivalent to the Nikon Z 6 for photographers who prefer the optical viewfinders, handling and battery lives of DSLRs. So what’s changed from the D750? Not a vast amount considering it’s been five years since that model, but there are three main differences. Every assignment, regardless E of location or objective, is approached in the same way: subject first. Weeks and months before travelling, I’ll research heavily around the respective species in an effort to fully understand them – their behaviour, habitat, unique adaptations, and so on. In my opinion, this is imperative to good wildlife photography. Such a deep understanding enables the photographer to predict behaviour, helping you to stay one step ahead. Is the bear readying to move? Is the cheetah about to hunt? The lion about to roar? Research means preparations can be made, and settings selected, to ensure the moment isn’t missed. Being a wildlife lover first and a photographer second means patience – the number one virtue for a wildlife photographer – comes much easier. Accessible local locations, allowing frequent visits for very little cost, have been hugely important in honing my technique and, more importantly, my ideas. It’s a cliché, but the more you go out to photograph, the luckier you become. I love capturing ‘common’ wildlife because I think they’re no less beautiful than their exotic friends, and make great muses on which to experiment and watch behaviour. Planning, perseverance, pondering and passion rather than technical knowhow or equipment has shaped my photography, and I wish I’d realised their importance much earlier.
