2 HOURS A water balloon can be a wonderful prop for action portraiture. Inspired by the portraits of photographer Tim Tadder, the exploding balloons look almost like wigs or hats of water when frozen mid-blast. But aside from all the watery fun, this project is also an exercise in lighting. In order to freeze the fast action of the water, we need to go beyond what our shutter speed is capable of, and instead make use of flash duration. Put simply, this is the length of time the burst of flash lasts, and with the right lights at the right setting we can make it as fast as 1/10,000 sec or more. Fujifilm has announced one of the most anticipated cameras of 2020, the Fujifilm X100V. The premium compact brings a host of upgraded specs and new features, while retaining the X100 line’s attractive retro styling – a combination which makes it quite possibly the perfect street photography camera. NEW UK DRONE LAWS As of 30 November 2019, new laws came into effect in the UK requiring anyone who flies a drone that weighs between 250g and 20kg to take an online safety test and register as a drone operator and flyer. The cost of the test and obtaining operator and flyer IDs is £9 per year, and the test needs to be retaken once every three years. Light comes in all kinds of different colours, or temperatures. Our eyes can adapt to these variations so that a white object will always appear white, but cameras need a little help to interpret colour temperature, which is why you either need to set the white balance correctly in-camera or alter it later on – and if you shoot raw you can do so with no loss in quality, as if you’d set the correct white balance when shooting. ASTRONAUT’S #SELFIESUNDAY SNAP IS OUT OF THIS WORLD NASA’s Jessica Meir shoots selfies with a Nikon D5 during spacewalk from the ISS There’s a lot of competition when it comes to getting your selfies seen and shared, and having a great location helps – and as astronaut Jessica Meir proves, locations don’t get much cooler than outer space. Meir recently snapped a couple of selfies during a spacewalk from the International Space Station (ISS), where she’s currently based. Particularly impressive is the ‘mirror selfie’ she shot, using one of the ISS’s solar panels to capture her reflection. The images were taken with a Nikon D5 fitted with a 28mm f/2.8D wide-angle lens, housed in a protective casing specially designed by NASA. Meir shared the images on her Twitter account with…
