SHOOT FOR THE EDIT

Many people believe that if you don’t capture a good image with your camera, you can fix it later in Lightroom or Photoshop. However, while there’s no doubt that we can do amazing things in post-production, there are many, many reasons why shooting images correctly for the edit makes good sense. Try to think of photography as a chain of events, from searching for a subject and taking the picture, to processing the raw file and finessing the subject in post-production. The final image is only as good as the weakest link in the chain – and this is why we can’t overlook the importance of shooting for the edit. PROJECT 1: THE BOAB TREE

During winter in northern Australia, you’ll see thousands of tiny fires dotting the landscape. Some are from lightning strikes, but most are planned ‘burns’ to manage the land. The resulting smoke in the air can detract from the classic landscape photograph, but it can also create some wonderfully atmospheric opportunities, especially at night when the lines of the fire fronts can be clearly seen. Also emblematic in this part of the world is the shapely boab tree, but it can be challenging to find one suitably positioned, away from other trees and bushes which tend to confuse the boab’s remarkable shape. Using our supplied Photoshop Action you can transform a portrait into a series of interlinking triangular shapes for a wonderful lo-fi treatment. We’ve supplied a starting portrait for this video tutorial, but any close-up portrait will work. Actions are one of the hidden jewels in Photoshop – you can use them to record and then play back any series of edits you like. www.dropbox.com Dropbox has been the go-to cloud storage choice for several years. You get a rather paltry 2GB for free, so really you’ll need to step up to the 2TB Plus plan at £7.99/$9.99 a month, although this is charged annually at an upfront cost of £95.88/$119.88. This also gets you extras like easy file sending and 30-day file recovery. A 3TB Professional plan is also available, but it’s geared towards small businesses, and isn’t great value for most photographers. Dropbox’s simple interface enables you to drag and drop the files you want to store online into a Dropbox folder on your machine. Microsoft OneDrive

www.onedrivelive.com As a Microsoft product, OneDrive cloud storage is deeply integrated into the company’s Windows 10 operating system. It can be accessed directly from the OS, much like a physical hard drive or SSD, making for an effortless cloud backup solution. There’s also a macOS app to enable a similar experience when using a Mac, although perhaps inevitably it’s not as slick as the iCloud ecosystem. OneDrive can also be used on iOS and Android mobile devices. The photos section is just one part of OneDrive, and it boasts clever features. WATCH THE HISTOGRAM

It might sound obvious to more experienced photographers, but the most important thing you can do is keep an eye on your camera’s histogram. Whether you’re capturing a single image or a number of elements to composite together, you need to record the best-quality pixels possible. While framing, focus and light are important, perhaps the most important technical skill is not overexposing your highlights. In photography, we are generally unappreciative of pure whites – snow or a white wall, for example, are expected to have some texture and tonality. If you overexpose the highlights, your pixels are recorded as pure white and, while you can darken them down to the required tonality in post-production, you can’t recover the texture – and texture is a quality that’s important for a satisfying…

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN THE FIELD

Experience will soon tell you that it’s not always possible to composite images together for a seamless result. For instance, if the light is coming from above in one element, but from the side in another, when the two images are merged the result can look unnatural. Successful composites are created when the image qualities of all the elements are similar or visually compatible – such as lighting, focus, colour balance, ISO setting and file resolution. Many photographers try to shoot their elements in flat light, enabling them to add in the key light in post-production. AMAZING RODENT RUMBLE ON TUBE WINS TOP PHOTO PRIZE Shot of mice fighting on station platform wins WPOTY People’s Choice award A remarkable image of two mice fighting on the platform of a London Underground station has won the Lumix People’s Choice award in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. The photo, entitled Station Squabble, was taken by Sam Rowley, who visited several tube stations over a number of nights to photograph mice before capturing the perfect shot, which shows two fighting over a morsel of food that had been dropped on the platform. drive.google.com Google Drive enables you to store any file type, and has a sliding pay scale depending on the services and storage you want. You get a generous 15GB for free, after which 100GB currently costs £1.59/$1.99 per month, 200GB is £2.49/$2.99 per month, and 2TB is £7.99/$9.99 per month; there are also 10, 20 and 30TB options, but they’re hugely expensive. An added bonus is that, like Apple and Microsoft, Drive isn’t just about storage: it’s integrated with Google’s cloud-based productivity apps, which rival Microsoft’s Word, Excel and PowerPoint. CAPTURE PERFECT PIXELS

1 SET UP YOUR COMPOSITION This capture technique will enable the creation of a series of files that gathers a set of perfect pixels. Begin by using a tripod, and make sure you’re happy with your framing and composition. 2 FOCUS ON CLOSEST OBJECT 2 Begin with focus stacking. Determine the correct exposure for the foreground. Focus on the closest object to the lens (with manual focus or touchscreen in Live View). PROJECT 2: THE EMERGING LAMA

Composites can help us to recreate an experience that our cameras just couldn’t quite capture. In Bhutan, lamas and monks officiate at many ceremonies. As they chant and read prayers, bells are rung, bushes are burnt and clouds of smoke envelop the scene. There is something quite ethereal about the experience. I positioned myself to fill the frame with smoke, and waited for it to clear in front of the lama’s face. However, despite me taking fifty or so exposures, not one shot had quite the right combination of smoke and lama. Either the smoke was beautifully shaped, but the lama obscured, or if the lama was clear to view, the smoke did not look voluminous enough. FOCAL LENGTH EXPLAINED

30 MIN Focal length is something you might be familiar with, but be honest: do you actually know what it is and how it’s measured? Focal length is used to determine a lens’s angle of view, which is what you see when you look through your camera’s viewfinder. It’s measured from the point where rays of light converge within a lens (the point of convergence) to the camera’s sensor (or film), and is calculated while the focus is set to infinity. Lenses with fixed focal lengths are known as prime lenses, and lenses with variable focal lengths are zoom lenses. As is the case with Microsoft Windows and OneDrive, iCloud is part of the Mac Finder app, making for super-easy file backup and sharing across devices.
