One of the greatest strengths of smartphone photography is the simplicity and streamlined shooting process. Whereas a full DSLR or mirrorless interchangeable lens system requires ample physical storage space and a thorough knowledge of selecting kit for specific purposes, the nucleus of a cameraphone setup is a single device. This makes camera work faster, more convenient and better suited to discreet shooting. That being said, the stripped-back smartphone system does have some clear drawbacks. Perhaps one of the most appealing aspects of smartphone photography is the convenience of image editing and ‘live’ processing. There are a plethora of applications to download, from sources such as the Google Play Store or the App Store for iPhone users, which can be used to apply editing processes or to add effects during capture. Some apps add pro, DSLR-like exposure-control functionality; others enable advanced effects like high dynamic range (HDR) photography, while some provide gimmicky special-effect filters. Yongnuo has announced its first lens designed for Sony’s range of mirrorless cameras. The Chinese budget accessory specialist already makes a number of highly-affordable prime lenses for Nikon and Canon DSLRs, and has now produced a 50mm f/1.8 ‘nifty fifty’ lens for use on Sony E-mount APS-C format cameras. The Yongnuo YN50mm f/1.8S DA DSM is designed to be used with the popular Sony A6000 mirrorless camera, and other more recent Alpha A6*** series models. As such, the effective focal length on those cameras becomes 75mm, making this a lens that will be ideal for portraiture. It’s not uncommon these days to find smartphones with 4K resolution video-shooting capabilities, while Full HD has become the norm. This provides the opportunity to create pro-grade clips in confined environments, as well as cross-media content. Always pre-select the frame rate manually to ensure you get a style you want, and if possible lock exposure so that it doesn’t change between frames. In this video tutorial we’re going to show you how you can transform a regular portrait into something much more interesting by combining it with various graphic elements to create a selection of cool semi-abstract effects. There was a time when no ‘serious’ photographer would consider using a smartphone to capture images destined for their professional portfolio. In the early days of the humble cameraphone this was largely justified – the technology available for use in mobile devices was far more limited in its capabilities than it is today, placing significant constraints on the image quality that phone cameras could generate. But over the past 10 years there have been major advances in image processing, making the use of very small sensors, such as those found in phones and compact digital cameras, less of a cap on resolution and ISO sensitivity. 1 RETHINK YOUR GRIP Hold your phone in a way that minimises the distance your fingers have to travel to work the controls, as this movement is a major cause of blur. 2 ENABLE STABILISATION Some smartphones don’t have IS active by default. The winners of the 2019 Military Visual Awards have been announced, with US Air Force photographer and journalist Chris Hibben taking the title of Photographer of the Year. Hibben, a reservist who in civilian life runs a TV production company, shot his winning portfolio of images during an eight-month deployment to the Horn of Africa, and during pre-deployment training exercises in the US. The 2019 competition saw the Military Visual Awards opened to service personnel from outside the United States for the first time, with the contest attracting more than 2,000 photos and videos from military photographers around the world.
