30 MINS It’s often said that eyes are the most important feature in a portrait. When you’re shooting portraits you should always be looking for ways to draw attention to them, and one way we can do this is by making sure they have catchlights. These are the tiny reflected highlights we see in a person’s eyes, and while they may be small, these little sparks draw the viewer in and bring the subject to life, which is why you’ll see catchlights in most good portraits. Catchlights are, of course, created by the surrounding lights. This could be anything that emits or reflects strong light, such as a lamp, a window, flash, or reflections from sunlight. Seaside holidays may seem like a distant dream for many of us right now, but when we are able to hit the beach and take to the surf again, the new Lomography Analogue Aqua looks to be the perfect camera for recording the occasion. The Analogue Aqua is a reloadable film camera with a waterproof housing, and comes with a roll of 35mm Lomo film. Forced-perspective photography is one of the oldest visual tricks in the book, and also one of the most fun. As you’ll discover in this video tutorial, with careful arrangement of objects in a scene you can fool the eye by combining small and large elements into a believable whole – and it gives you a great excuse to play with model cars! It’s a great opportunity to combine shooting skills with Photoshop magic. You’ll start off by setting up a model car. Wildlife photographer Peter Lindel has won the 2020 GDT (German Society for Nature Photography) Nature Photographer of the Year competition with a captivating image of a sun-drenched hare, captured close to his home city of Dortmund. “This photo was taken in July of 2019, when months of searching [for] a suitable location led me to a dirt road, which offered the most beautiful morning light, lovely vegetation and… three hares,” Lindel said. As well as Nature Photographer of the Year, which is open to GDT members, the society also runs the European Wildlife Photographer of the Year, which is open to photographers across Europe. www.fujifilm.co.uk £1,199/$1,399 The Fujifilm X100V is part of Fujifilm’s X-Series camera range, but it’s a bit of an outlier. Unlike its siblings, it doesn’t take interchangeable lenses. Instead, it has a fixed 23mm f/2 lens (35mm equivalent), which offers a classic focal length for everyday use and street photography, and a design that’s slim enough to slide into a jacket pocket. The X100V is the fifth version of this design: it has Fujifilm’s latest 26.1-megapixel X-Trans processor, a new and superior lens, and a new tilting touchscreen.
