Although the coronavirus outbreak means our opportunities to get outside and take photos are limited, that doesn’t mean you can’t still capture some amazing images – quite the opposite in fact. Now is the time to start thinking more creatively, by using what you have lying around the house to fill your portfolio with fantastic still life pictures, indoor macro shots, and portraiture that you can shoot indoors, or in your garden. The big camera manufacturers have been inching their way towards making the perfect vlogging camera for YouTubers in the last couple of years – and Sony might have cracked it with the new ZV-1. The ZV-1 offers class-leading autofocus, a bright 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 lens, and design touches like the sideflipping screen and 3.5mm microphone port. It’s based on Sony’s popular line of RX100 compact cameras, and is a mix of the best video-friendly features from the RX100 Mark V and RX100 Mark VII. This includes its bright lens, which is more suitable for vlogging than the dimmer 24-200mm lens in the RX100 Mark VII, Sony’s Steadyshot stabilization for video, plus Sony’s latest Real-time Eye AF and Real-time tracking. 01 TELL A STORY WITH MATCHES It’s possible to create a striking photo with just a box of matches and a piece of colourful card or paper. We want to show a series of matches, each one progressively more burnt than the last, to create a simple visual story. So grab your first match, secure it to a table with a blob of Blu-Tack, then ignite it with another match, wait for it to burn down to the point you want, and then blow out the flame. Now repeat this with more matches until you have several, with each burned down a little further than the previous one. Next, set up a piece of colourful card near a bright window and neatly place your matches in order, including an unburned…

11 SHOOT A CLOSE-UP OF AN EYE A macro lens is best for this shot. Mount the camera on a tripod, select Aperture Priority mode, select a wide aperture such as f/2.8, and set the ISO to 400. Position yourself close to a bright window so that you’ve got plenty of natural light, and set the lens to its maximum 1:1 reproduction ratio. It’s really handy if you have a camera with a flip–out screen, as you can then use Live View, move closer or further away until your eye is pin-sharp, and take the shot – if you don’t, you’ll have to experiment with focusing and composition, pre-focusing on a stand-in object postioned roughly where your face will be. 12 TAKE FUN PET PORTRAITS If you’re self-isolating with pets…

Panasonic has announced a new Lumix S lens for its fullframe mirrorless cameras, with a novel 20-60mm focal range. The Panasonic Lumix S 20-60mm f/3.5-5.6 has a modest-sounding 3x zoom range, but it’s one that does the work usually done by two separate optics. At its widest it offers a 20mm focal length you’d normally only get from an ultra-wide-angle lens, and at its longest it offers an angle of view just slightly longer than a standard lens. Normally, you’d need two separate lenses to do both of these jobs, so Panasonic seems to have pulled off a masterstroke with a lens that’s both modestly specced and modestly priced. 05 USE MINIATURE FIGURES By using miniature figures you can turn a bowl of cereal into a macro swimming pool, or food into a forest, to create some fun and inventive images. A macro lens with a reproduction ratio of 1:1 will help you to get closer to the mini figures, and will also make the figures look more life-size, but you can get reasonable results with a kit lens. PLAY WITH YOUR FOOD! Shoot these fantastically fun food scenes with miniature figures and a macro lens 1 ADD THE FIGURES We’re using 1:87 scale miniatures by German company Preiser. 14 GET CREATIVE WITH COLOURED SHEETS OF PAPER You can capture fantastic photos with everyday household items, and this colourful abstract image is created with curled-up strips of coloured card or paper. First, you’ll need to get an assortment of coloured paper: we cut A4 sheets into strips a few inches wide, as this makes it easier for the flash light to shine through the curls. We used seven sheets to create enough curls, offsetting them and loosely folding them back on themselves to create the loops. Secure the sheets in place with a staple, a peg, or a small weight. Frame a tight composition with a zoom or macro lens, and set up your flash with some triggers off-camera, just behind the paper curls, as below. Take the shot,…

1 HOUR We often think of cameras as tools for recording the world as we see it, but they’re also capable of capturing far more than the eye can perceive. Light painting is a case in point. To the eye, a dark night is just that, but if we stick the camera on a tripod, open the shutter for a couple of minutes and wave a torch around, then all of a sudden our camera starts to see things differently. To the camera’s sensor, light is cumulative, so when there’s minimal ambient light we’re able to build up our own light gradually, in exactly the places where we want it – a single torch beam can light an entire scene, and even an expansive landscape.
