MANUAL MODE Emma set Tom’s camera to Manual mode so that he could dial in precise settings that wouldn’t change if the natural light did – important when using studio flash. To start with she advised Tom to set a shutter speed of 1/125 sec, a low ISO of 100 for the best image quality, and an aperture of f/2.8 for a shallow depth of field, which adds to the dreamy quality of boudoir images. ONE SHOT AF Emma got Tom to set his focus mode to One Shot AF, so the camera would only focus once when he half-pressed the shutter button and would only use a single focus point. 1 HOUR Adding human interest to a landscape is a fantastic way to introduce a subject to a flat scene, and it also affords you a little bit more control over your composition. Social media is teeming with figure-in-a-landscape photos, and we’re going to show you just how effective this technique can be. We shot our sunrise image in the UK’s Lake District. With no interesting subject, and the lake and sky dominating the frame, we would have struggled to take a traditional landscape – but with our model positioned on a partially submerged rock we were able to create a clear subject. The DxO Nik Collection 3 is the latest version of a plug-in suite first developed by Nik Software, bought by Google and then rescued from potential obscurity by DxO. It comprises a set of creative plugins: Analog Efex Pro, Color Efex Pro, HDR Efex Pro, Silver Efex Pro and Viveza, and three correction tools: Sharpener Pro, Dfine, and the new Perspective Efex. Perspective Efex can correct lens distortion (if it has access to the original image file), perspective distortion, and volumetric distortion, where wide-angle lenses ‘stretch’ objects near the edges of the frame. Despite its age, the Nik Collection has long been considered one of the best photo editing plug-in suites. One of the most appealing things about macro O photography is the way it lets you see a tiny world in fantastic detail. But what if the detail straight-out-of-camera just isn’t enough? In this video tutorial we’ll combine two camera techniques that enable you to expand depth of field and your image’s resolution. This will result in a level of fine detail that simply wouldn’t be possible with a single frame. Depth of field is one of the main considerations with close-up photography. When the subject is very close to the lens – as is usually the case with macro shots – the depth of field can be incredibly shallow, even when you’re using a narrow aperture. As long as your subject is stationary, you can get around this problem…

First seen with the Mavic Mini, DJI Fly is a distinctly less ‘busy’ variant of DJI’s control software, making it easier to find the functions you need. It’s designed for less experienced pilots, removing screen clutter and adopting a styling more akin to a phone’s camera app. Personally, we prefer DJI Go 4, if only for the battery meter. Switching camera modes brings up a pop-up menu with the different options you can choose from: Camera, Video, QuickShot, Hyperlapse, and – although you can’t see it without scrolling – Panoramas. Built-in mini-tutorials for the QuickShots are informative and not at all intrusive, and the collision sensor ‘hot spots’ at the top and bottom of the screen are handy without being obtrusive. 1 LARGE OCTOBOX DIFFUSER Emma rates this 47-inch (120cm) octobox, by Neewer, as it’s budget-friendly, costing just £50, but does an ace job of softening harsh flash to create soft light. Her top tip when using it is to make sure the bottom edge of the octobox is level with the model’s chin, then angle it down, so the light is coming down from above for the most flattering effect. 2 FULL-FRAME CANON AND LENS Emma uses a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV for portraiture, which is a pro DSLR body. For most of her portraiture, Emma pairs it with Canon’s EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, which is razor-sharp, fast to focus in low light, and has a great zoom range, from wide-angle at 24mm to short telephoto at 70mm.…

The shortlist has been announced for the inaugural World Sports Photography Awards, showcasing stunning images from more than 100 of the world’s top sports photographers. The contest comprises eight categories: Joy, Precision, Speed, Focus, Determination, Power, View, and Celebration. As well as featuring stars including Lewis Hamilton, Paul Pogba, Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic, Tiger Woods and Anthony Joshua in action, the images include behind-the-scenes glimpses, and photos of sporting venues and fans. The contest’s co-founder, Alan Whiter, says: “Sport and photography have a long and powerful relationship. The Mavic range is DJI’s family of consumer camera drones; the now-familiar folding design has cascaded down from the Mavic (launched in August 2018) through to the recent super-light Mavic Mini (which arrived in late 2019). The only outlier was the original Mavic Air, from early 2018. Its friendly styling in a choice of colours was a plus, but even at launch the Mavic Air had some major drawbacks: its battery life was poor, and its range was disappointing.
