30 MINS If you tend to forego heading out with your camera on days with grey skies and muted lighting, you may be missing out. Drab weather is ideal for shooting minimalist seascapes like this one, and it’s also the perfect opportunity to brush up your long-exposure technique. We braved wind, cold weather and the occasional shower to photograph this coastal beacon. The lone subject, surrounded by sea and sky, provided us with a fine composition – minimalist photography tends to feature clean compositions. We used a 10-stop ND filter to achieve a six-second exposure, which enabled us to smooth out the sea and soften the clouds. Potensic has taken the wraps of a serious-looking camera drone that will cost just $299 (about £235). The Potensic Dreamer has a 1/3-inch Sony sensor which can shoot 8.3MP stills, although while it’s billed as a 4K drone, in reality it shoots video at 2.7K at frame rate of 30fps – even so, that matches the resolution of the highly popular DJI Mavic Mini. Unlike the Mavic Mini, however, the Dreamer doesn’t have foldable arms – and it’s significantly heavier, with a takeoff weight of around 760g, which means that under current drone regulations you’ll need to register it before you can fly it in the UK or USA. 1 THIS ONE GOES ALL THE WAY UP TO 11 Keep the aperture at around f/11 when you’re using lights. Shooting at f/8 is okay for people, but people don’t tend to have the long noses that dogs do, and you’ll need that depth of field if they’re looking straight at you. 2 NOT SO NIFTY A 50mm lens is good for wider shots, but it’s no good for shooting tighter compositions. Some photographers will use this focal length if they’re able to get in really close, but a lot of dogs won’t like strangers getting too close to them. 3 KEEP YOUR DISTANCE Use an 85mm prime or 100mm on your zoom lens to get those close-up shots. 1 SUBJECTS MATTER Find a suitable minimalist subject. Minimalist photos tend to feature negative space and clean compositions, with very little to detract from the subject. We photographed the Philip Lucette Beacon at Shaldon in Devon, UK. At high tide the sea surrounds the structure, making it an ideal subject. 2 FRAME BY FRAME Set up your camera and lens (with filter holder) on a tripod. We activated Live View on our Nikon D800, and also displayed the virtual horizon overlay so that we could keep the horizon level. Don’t be afraid to try both portrait and landscape compositions. 3 LENS AND VR Minimalist photos can be taken with almost any lens. It’s such a fast and responsive camera, and makes capturing action shots a joy. Remembering Cheetahs is the latest in the Remembering Wildlife series of charity books founded by wildlife photographer Margot Raggett. The first book in the series, Remembering Elephants, and its successors, Remembering Rhinos, Remembering Great Apes, and Remembering Lions, have between them raised more than £622,000 for some 40 conservation projects across 23 countries. The Filter Gallery is a creative hub for an abundance of effects in Photoshop. If you’re looking for a different look or a fun treatment, you’ll find plenty of vibrant options here. Broadly speaking, these are Photoshop’s creative effects filters, rather than the more pragmatic filters found in the Blur Gallery, or the Liquify Filter. They can be used, for example, to give your image a pencil sketch look, a painterly finish or a pattern-like texture. All the filters in the Filter Gallery work by altering pixels using universal algorithms, so the effects aren’t tailored towards the content of the image, but rather the makeup of the pixel values, and as such, effects can sometimes seem tacky or generic.
