Tethered shooting used to be something you’d only witness in a professional photo studio, but thanks to the democratising effect of affordable digital cameras, it’s now well and truly available to the masses. So what is tethering, and why would you want to do it? As the name suggests, tethering your camera means attaching it to a computer, and using the computer to select the desired camera settings and fire the shutter. You can then review the images in real time on a larger screen than the one on the rear of your camera. This process became a cornerstone of commercial studio photography, as photographers could invite art directors or commissioning editors along to see how shoots were progressing – very useful for fashion photography where the look is critical.…

Australian photographer Jasmine Carey has won the world’s biggest prize photographic competition this year, netting herself a cool $120,000 in the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award with her breathtaking underwater image of a mother humpback whale sleeping alongside her two-week-old calf. The HIPA awards are now in their ninth year, and are known for their huge cash prizes, which are funded by the Crown Prince of Dubai, after whom the awards are named. This year’s main competition was on the theme of Water, with prizes also awarded in General, Portfolio and Mobile categories. Carey’s winning shot was taken in the Vava’u Islands in Tonga. 1 EXPOSE FOR BACKDROPS Before turning on the flash, look for an angle where the backdrop is lighter than the subject, then try a test shot. Set Manual mode with a shutter speed of 1/200 sec, a wide aperture, like f/2.8, and use a low ISO (100 here). We want the backdrop to be correctly exposed, and the subject to be slightly dark. 2 WORK OUT A FLASH POWER Next, set up a flashgun in an umbrella or softbox, positioned slightly to the side of the camera in front of your subject. Attach a trigger so it can be fired wirelessly, then, using manual flash power, take a couple of test shots to determine the right power to light the face. Adobe has announced a host of updates across its suite of image-editing apps, including Photoshop and Camera Raw. The big news for Photoshop fans is AI-powered improvements to the Select Subject tool, which has been optimised to automatically recognise people and, in particular, complex outlines around hair. The command is now content-aware, so applies new algorithms if it detects a person in the scene. And, as you can see in the images above, it’s also now much better at handling hair, which is one of the most difficult and time-consuming subjects to mask by hand. Potentially more interesting to a wider range of photographers are the changes to Camera Raw. With new cases of Covid-19 still being reported, it’s more important than ever to keep all your equipment sanitised. Whether you’re the only one using your kit, or you’re sharing it with your family or household, it’s crucial to keep everything that you handle clean and sanitised – especially since your camera comes up and makes direct contact with your face, including your eye area. 1 SHOOT SOFT BACKGROUNDS When looking for the perfect backdrop it helps to experiment by defocusing the lens, and trying out different backgrounds, taking a few test shots to see how the background looks when blurred. The best backdrops for this usually have a mix of light and dark; specular highlights like bright lights can also look beautiful when blurred, resulting in some delightful-looking bokeh. 2 USE A WIDE APERTURE A wide aperture gives us the lovely blurred backdrop that we want for this kind of portrait. Most of our shots were taken at f/2.8, but for comparison here’s one taken at f/8 – you can see how this gives us a more detailed background. When you’re staying at home as much as possible you can soon run out of things to shoot. After all, there’s a limit to the number of family portraits, bowls of fruit and vases of flowers you can photograph before your creative mojo starts to diminish. But step outside and, if you’re lucky enough to have a backyard or garden, you can capture wonderful shots of domestic birds and other wildlife.
